While not mandatory, an increasing number of cosmetics companies label their products with expiration dates. Use these as general guidelines certainly, but I can’t emphasize enough that when it comes to assessing safety that there are no set rules when it comes to expired skin care products. Changes in smell, color or consistency are signs to trash your product. In order to maintain healthy skin, replace your skin care products on a regular basis.
Simple alcohols destroy the skin’s barrier, called the acid mantle, which is what keeps your skin’s pH in its happy place (and your skin blemish-free). “A lot of products that are marketed to treat acne do not maintain — or even consider the importance of — the skin’s acid mantle,” explains Natarsha Bimson, a Los Angeles-based aesthetician. “It’s a huge issue.” In one study, even a small, 3 percent alcohol solution applied to skin cells over the course of two days increased cell death by 26 percent — in some acne treatments, like Kate Somerville’s EradiKate, alcohol is one of the first ingredients listed, meaning it’s a largely alcohol-based formula.

Multani mitti, Lemon or Orange juice extract: Mix one teaspoon of multani mitti with half a teaspoon of lemon or orange juice. Apply this paste on your face & let it dry. After fifteen minutes, wash it off thoroughly.

What’s Going On: Blame it on your clogged pores. “Skin cells stick together inside your pores, blocking the opening,” explains Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist and the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The white you see at the top—hence “whitehead”—is the blocked pore. Oil trapped beneath it mingles with grime and bacteria, causing inflammation and the red, swollen bump that ultimately makes a pimple.
It’s best to wash your face twice a day, but if you can manage only once, do it in the evening: Never sleep in your makeup, says Linder. Does your skin feel squeaky-clean after cleansing? Then you’re stripping it of necessary natural oils, and it will eventually feel dry, tight, and itchy. Use a nonsoap face wash. For oily complexions, one with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide is a good choice. For combination or dry skin, try a creamy cleanser.

Still, if you want to shop around, these brands represent decent options at a range of price points.
Massage your face with nourishing oils — sweet almond, coconut, olive and jojoba oils are good choices — before going to bed. Black skin tends to be on the dry side, so allowing oils to soak into the skin overnight can contribute to glowing skin in the morning. Apply the oil to the skin using your fingertips. Use caution when massaging the sensitive tissues around the eyes.
Here is a product that is advertised as “dermatologist tested and clinically tested to help visibly reduce redness and pimple size by morning to give visibly clearer skin.” While it certainly will get dirt, grease, makeup off your skin, the salicylic acid that reduces redness and pimple size get washed down the drain just a few seconds after you apply them to your face. This product will leave your skin cleaner but not clearer. Still, retailing for just US $8.99 for 6.78 fluid oz/204 ml, it is not a bad buy for a skin cleanser. It just won’t actually shrink pimples. Since the wash contains a botanical extract called helichrysum, avoid it if you have allergies of any kind.
The benefits include a longer-lasting effect. And at least one filler offers semi-permanent filling of lines and creases. Remember, products with longer-lasting effects are more likely to cause side effects. And when not used correctly, synthetic wrinkle fillers may cause disfigurement.
Pick soothing ingredients if you have irritation. Irritation and flaky skin can be common for both dry and sensitive skin types. To soothe your skin, pick products that contain moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe, chamomile, green tea extract, or Vitamin C.
For just US $24.99 you can buy four Clearasil products in a single acne protection system. You get a bottle of StayClear Daily Face Wash (5 ounces/150 ml), a bottle of StayClear Daily Toner (5 ounces/150 ml), a bottle of StayClear Daily Lotion (1.5 ounces/45 ml), and a tube of quick-start benzoyl peroxide gel for disinfecting pimples. The gel is a proven disinfectant for pimples. But the other products in this acne care system have serious problems.
The most familiar Clearasil product for acne is also the best. This familiar peach-colored cream costs just US $6.29 for a 1 oz/28 gram tube, and the 10% benzoyl peroxide in the formula zaps the bacteria in infected pimples in just two days.
