* Regular exfoliation helps get rid of dead skin, which in turn helps your skin breathe and absorb other nutrients. Exfoliated skin looks fresh and healthy. For a 100 percent natural skin exfoliator you can use an almond orange face scrub.
RoC’s Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($24) was rated highly by testers for its luxurious moisturizing feel — it has a texture similar to petroleum jelly, although it’s not sticky and absorbs much faster. It comes in a squeeze tube to protect the formula from light and oxygen. The drawback is its scent, the strongest among our top pick. It reminded us of scented baby wipes, and testers were split on whether they’d be willing to tolerate the strong aroma and wear it nightly. Again: It has retinoids and AHAs, but no HA, so double up with a quality moisturizer.
AHAs on their own will help improve the appearance of your skin, but by selecting a product with both a retinoid and an AHA, you’re getting two of the best clinically proven anti-aging ingredients in one.
La Prairie was our top pick the first time we reviewed wrinkle creams, back in 2016. At the time was the only product we found that offered the triple whammy of retinoids, AHAs, and sodium hyaluronate. And there’s a lot to love about La Prairie. Testers adored its texture, both immediately after applying, and hours later. It’s a lightweight formula that absorbs nearly instantly, and rests almost invisibly on the skin. This is particularly impressive given that La Prairie also includes a host of moisturizing plant-based oils like jojoba and sunflower seed oil. These absorbed quickly when we applied in the evening, and helped soothe our skin so our faces felt refreshed and moisturized in the morning.
Maximize cucumber’s calming effect by shredding it—that way it will cover more of your puffy eyes than two little slices. Skin-care expert Ole Henriksen recommends a treatment that’s loved by clients like Jessica Alba: Wrap grated cuke, sushi-style, in cheese cloth. Sit down, tilt your head back, and place the roll across your eyes.
I love the product. I’ve used it before but, this time, the pump is really bad. It’s very stiff so you either can’t get anything out of it or, when you push it too hard, the product squirts across the room. The last bottle I had worked much better.
A low-glycemic diet-lots of vegetables, whole grains, and few processed sugars-can eliminate acne, according to a new Australian study. Refined carbohydrates, sugary treats, and processed foods spike insulin, which triggers a surge of other hormones that can cause blemishes. Low-glycemic foods, meanwhile, help the body regulate insulin, says Valori Treloar, an integrative dermatologist in Newton, Mass., and the author of The Clear Skin Diet.
That’s right. Any acne treatment is a weeks-long experiment that you’re conducting with your skin. Acne is slow to heal, and in some cases, it can get worse before it gets better (nearly every benzoyl peroxide product we looked at emphasized the likeliness of irritating acne further, and starting off with a lighter application). April W. Armstrong, a doctor at the University of California Davis Health System, recommends waiting at least one month before you deem a product ineffective, and Townsend agrees.
“I keep extra beauty treatments in my car in a little bag. When I’m in bad traffic (at a red light of course), I apply serum, an eye mask, teeth whitening strips, eyebrow gel, and more!” -Francesca Fusco, dermatologist, New York City.
Then there’s the fun factor: Many of the latest innovations bubble up, turn colors and peel off. Yes, it’s a little gimmicky, and this step is certainly not essential in your routine. “Think of masks like boosters — not necessary but beneficial,” Mattioli says.
1) Phony Website – This is the first thing you need to look for any time you find a website that looks like a popular magazine recommending products. Look at the URL and see if it matches the magazine it claims to be—whether it’s People or Cosmopolitan or Woman’s Day. For the record, I will freely (and proudly) tell you that Woman’s Answers is NOT affiliated with Woman’s Day in any way—we are an alternative with a more science-based approach to our information. Here’s an example of what I mean:
Multani mitti is the best suited face pack for oily skin. It helps to remove acne prone skin. Prepare a paste of Multani mitti with the required amount of rosewater. You can also add a pinch of turmeric into it. Apply this solution on the skin. Leave it to dry and rinse it off with lukewarm water.
A non-product-related tip Choi finishes up on is diet. “For me, eating fried and greasy foods affects my skin,” she wrote. “Make sure to drink tons of water daily! Eat more [fruits and vegetables].” Eating better and drinking more H2O is always a good idea, but water isn’t as magical as everyone makes it sounds. “This is one of the biggest myths in all of dermatology,” Elizabeth Tanzi, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, department of dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center once told Allure.”Drinking six to eight glasses of water does not hydrate the skin from within. Drinking water is essential for overall health, but it has very little to do with the level of skin hydration.”
Try acupuncture to improve circulation, digestion and immunity internally, all of which supports healthy skin externally. Holey recommends weekly treatments initially, then monthly maintenance sessions.
In the same way popping a zit has that instant gratification, peeling off a pore strip provides a similar release. Try perennial favorite Bioré Pore Strips, $9, to get the gunk out once a week and watch your pores clear right before your eyes.
Retin-A may cause your skin to become very red and dry, and may cause peeling. Newer medications have milder side effects. You should ask your doctor to switch your medication if you suffer some of these side effects.
Of course there are ways around that. Some jars come with applicators: little spoons that you’re supposed to use to take dollops of the product out. Maybe you’re the type that can always follow the rules (we’re not) — so while we didn’t declare tubs a deal breaker, we did consider it.
Cucumber is the best facial mask to treat oily skin. It helps to prevent blemishes, and reduces dark spots. It also provides a radiant looking skin. Blend cucumber juice and add a few drops of lemon juice into it. If you want, you can also add a pinch of turmeric into it. Mix them well and apply it on your skin. Let it dry for some time and rinse it off with water.
Fights Ageing: The antioxidants, as mentioned above, help in eliminating the free radicals triggering the premature onset of fine lines and wrinkles. Thus, daily external application of this golden-hued oil ensures youthful skin.
Need a little detox? Lemons support your liver and kidneys, and there’s a clear connection between healthy organs and healthy skin. Vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges may help prevent wrinkles, too.
The skin around your eyes is thin and delicate, which means you should treat it like the fragile flower that it is. An eye cream provides the area with extra helpings of hydration and protection. Use your ring finger to very gently tap (never rub!) eye cream around the entire orbital bone, avoiding the water line.

Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance.
Cleansing Gel: “In the case of oily skin, oil breeds bacteria, and bacteria leads to breakouts,” Rouleau says. “Wash your skin three times a day if possible. The more oil, the more breeding ground for blemishes.” She recommends using a gel or foam cleanser that’s sulfate-free. “You want agents that will cut the oil but you don’t want to dry your skin out with too many detergents,” she says. We love Dr. Goldfaden MD’s Pure Start Cleanser ($35) and The Organic Pharmacy’s Peppermint, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus Face Wash ($67).
Can you survive without an eye cream? Absolutely. But, if you have specific concerns — like hyperpigmentation, dryness or puffiness — you might want to try one. “The skin around the eyes is quite thin and delicate, and more likely to react to irritating ingredients than other areas,” Dr. Nazarian says. “Therefore, dermatologists typically recommend an eye cream that considers the potential sensitivity and has more tolerable concentrations of active ingredients.”
Dermalogica sells its full-size Clear Start products a la carte (all at around $20 — this line is definitely not made for the thrifty), and there are even more options than the five in the travel kit. We were surprised how much the products appealed to us: We didn’t pay attention to the aesthetics of most acne treatments, but the Clear Start caught our eye in a god way. More importantly, we loved the mix of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, plus all-natural heavy hitters like tea tree oil and witch hazel. And in addition to the wash, toner, moisturizer, and treatments, the kit includes an acne-safe (read: oil-free) sunscreen in its lineup.
We consider ourselves quite the skincare fanatics here at Byrdie HQ—it’s hard not to be when our desks look like they could be featured in an episode of Hoarders: Skincare Edition (currently in the process of pitching that idea to A&E). However, we are well aware that our plight is a unique one and that the average woman is more concerned about what to use on her face rather than where to store her eighth cleanser of the week.
Men with acne need to pay attention to their skin care regimen, too. Shaving can be both a plus and minus for a man’s skin. The plus is that shaving each day acts as a natural exfoliant, opening your pores so the excess oil can drain out. But if you shave the wrong way or use the wrong products, you could wind up with more acne. Or, you could get razor bumps, which aren’t acne but look a lot like them. Razor bumps pop up when newly cut, sharp-ended hairs turn back into the skin and make the skin swell up.
Estee Lauder Perfectionist CP+R Wrinkle Lifting Serum (Est. $100 for 1.7oz) is another over-the-counter anti-wrinkle serum that gets raves from experts and users. Yes, it’s pricey, but it gets rave reviews across multiple sites such as Macy’s, Sephora and Nordstrom. Amazon carries it as well, and the prices line up with what we see elsewhere, however, the ratings at Amazon are lowered by reports of counterfeit products. We have no way of verifying or refuting those reports, other than to suggest that you should be sure to buy from a seller (Amazon does not sell this themselves) with top user feedback to ensure you are getting the real thing.
I’m a big fan of hydrolyzed collagen in moisturizers. It refines the skin surface and gives it a beautiful texture. It also tends to only be in the more expensive creams so I was excited to find this. Immediately after I spread it over my clean face my skin turned bright red as though I had a bad sunburn. My face also heated up to a very uncomfortable level. It died down after an hour or so but why use something that hurts? I had to cover my face with straight aloe vera gel to calm it down. I also felt that it was too light weight for my 63 year old complexion.
When body weight goes up and down, it loosens elasticity and makes skin sag, says Dr. Levine. So she suggests finding a happy medium (even if it’s heavier) on the scale: “You lose the weight first in the face, but a fuller face may just look younger.”
“I put sunscreen, Chanel UV Essentiel 50, on before day flights since UVA goes through airplane windows. I also sit on the aisle. ” –Amy Wechsler, board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry, New York City
A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn’t clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated.
My Experience: My primary question: Why not just use a toner and a serum in place of this essence step? It seemed obsolete to me. Yes, it was nice to splash my face with the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence ($28, amazon.com). But it felt like the results I was attempting to gain from using an essence could have been achieved with the typical toner-serum combo. Although I didn’t really understand it’s purpose, I continued to use essence every night hoping it’s significance would wow me by the end of the week.
A black skin care regimen should include a skin toner. Skin toners offer many benefits to the skin including: restoring the natural pH balance of the skin, reducing skin oil secretions, sloughing away dead skin cells, clearing away impurities and encouraging blood circulation. Skin toners give the skin a brighter, livelier appearance and should be applied to the face and neck following the cleansing process. Avoid skin toners containing harmful ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and alcohol. For best results, choose a skin toner especially designed for dark skin.
“Apply sunscreen to the neck, chest, and hands before the face–these areas age faster and are harder to improve than the face. We often forget to apply sunscreen there even though they’re exposed as much as the face.” –Doris Day, dermatologist, New York City
“Dry, overly washed skin looks more aged and highlights wrinkles than hydrated skin. Also, as we get older, skin naturally loses the ability to maintain its own natural moisture retention. Stick to something like Dove Beauty Bar ($5), and you can’t go wrong.” — Rachel Nazarian of Schweiger Dermatology Group
“Did you know that some cleansers may shrink your skin cells, making your face feel dry and uncomfortable? DailyClear Daily Face Wash is scientifically formulated to gently cleanse deep into your pores, moisturize and soften skin, and prevent overdrying.”

  1. “Retinol is the best-studied OTC ingredient to minimize signs of skin aging, and this is my go-to product for that. It stimulates collagen production to help keep the skin foundation strong. Ultimately, this helps the skin resist lines and wrinkles from setting in. Not all retinol products are created equally; it is important to choose a product that has proven stability, penetration into the skin, and a clinical effect.”
There are a variety of anti-wrinkle creams on the market, and the results of each cream greatly depend on the individual’s specific skin care needs. Anti-wrinkle creams that contain all-natural ingredients fare better than many creams that contain filler ingredients, and certain fragrances.
WITCH HAZEL FOR ACNE The treatment of acne is a tough challenge for many people and this is so because many OTC acne products only offer temporary solutions, and leave a lot of negative side effects and these side effects also takes a lot of trouble to deal with them. How to Handle It: Speaking of touching, don’t! Picking it, squeezing it, or poking at it will only worsen the situation. These may disappear on their own after a few days. Otherwise, Zeichner suggests visiting your dermatologist for a shot of cortisone, which will reduce inflammation and shrink it in just 24 to 48 hours. But if a last-minute appointment isn’t in the cards, play mad scientist. First, ice the area, and then apply salicylic acid gel, benzoyl peroxide gel, and 1 percent hydrocortisone cream. The combo will calm skin, kill bacteria, and draw out excess oil from the pimple—all things necessary to take this down, says Zeichner.
You need to apply a moisturizer within three minutes of toweling your skin dry. Use hypoallergenic moisturizers with rich oils and water-binding ingredients that soak deeply into your skin. This locks in healing moisture that your skin soaked into the skin layers when you washed or bathed.

  2. Behold your ablutions, for instance. You’re never sure whether a specific body wash or soap will reduce or promote your acne. You think twice to use a harsh sponge or loofah to clear your body of dirt and bacteria, as it might irritate and worsen your body acne.
If you assume a crusty cut at the corner of your mouth is chapped lips, don’t. It could be perlèche, a fungal infection. Dab on an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin ($8; at Walgreens) every few hours to kill the bacteria, says Dr. Fusco.

Keep it up with the broad-spectrum SPF 30 hydrator; for an extra boost of protection from environmental aggressors like pollution and UVA/UVB rays, layer a vitamin C serum underneath. (It can also help with hyperpigmentation, says Linder.) Look for one containing at least 15 to 20 percent L-ascorbic acid, the most effective form of the vitamin. A facial oil is a good way to moisturize and add back your glow, says Marmur. It has some light-reflective qualities and drenches the skin, plumping it and temporarily diminishing fine lines. Just don’t forget to add sunscreen.
Many non-retinol wrinkle creams contain various antioxidants, which can prevent the fine lines and wrinkles associated with aging, without the irritation that many experience with retinol (retinol creams also tend to be pricier, sometimes much pricier). These products can be used during the day as part of your morning skin regimen. They usually contain ingredients that plump the skin, minimize skin damage, and even, in some cases, reverse it. That difference can be subtle — there is no magic potion that will make your wrinkles disappear overnight, or prevent all wrinkles — but if you use them consistently you should see an improvement.

  3. Your skin can be classified as normal if it isn’t particularly oily or dry and if anti-aging, acne, and sensitivity aren’t concerns on your radar—in other words, the skin type all of us wish we had. This is the best skincare routine for normal skin.
“After sunlight/UV exposure, the second cause of wrinkles is sleeping. Squishing your face into a pillow for approximately 2500 hours per year while you sleep is like ironing wrinkles into the skin. Strategically position your head so the lower half of your face never touches your pillow. What this helps to prevent is a squishing of the face, which would exacerbate the wrinkles that come with age. These are the deep creases also known as the ‘parentheses’ or ‘marionette’ lines that run from the nostril to the corner of the mouth on both sides of the face and are enhanced every time you smile or laugh.” — Renée Rouleau
All acne is not, actually, created equal. This makes perfect sense, seeing as there are so many factors, from hygiene to hormones to genetics, that can both lead to and exacerbate your breakouts. But knowledge is power, and just knowing that there are different types—and that each kind requires its own plan of attack—puts you ahead of the clear-skin curve. Once you figure out what you’re working with, it gets far easier to treat. Here, your ultimate guide to identifying, and then taking down, every type of acne out there.

  4. For some reason, customers in BC, Canada have experienced extended delay for their items to be delivered (It sometimes take up to two months). Apparently, there are issues in Canada Post for this particular. Please be aware when you order items delivered to BC.
Risks are similar to other wrinkle fillers, including bruising, redness, and swelling at the site of the injection. Because the fillers come from your body, these injections do not require FDA approval.
Promising Review: “I have sensitive, fair, blemish-prone, combination skin. I was previously using Proactiv. But this wash is a much less expensive alternative. It also smells better than Proactiv! The Neutrogena wash has worked really well on my combination skin. I always feel refreshed after I use it. I usually scrub it on my face, rinse with warm water, and then use a warm, wet washcloth to get any remaining scrub off of my face. I also use the Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion to moisturize my face.” —Mhanley
Boost your sunscreen by popping a pomegranate-extract supplement (up to 60 mg; at health-food stores). It can enhance skin’s sun-protective properties by 25 percent, says L.A. dermatologist Howard Murad.
Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect.

  5. A couple of creams checked all the boxes of our ingredient wish list but came in the wrong packaging. They both use jars. Unlike squeeze tubes and pump bottles, a jar means that the entire cream is exposed to air, sun, and bacteria every time it’s used. If you’re sold on the idea of a thick lotion or cream, these runners-up are the closest competitors to the $530 La Prairie. And if you do opt for a wrinkle cream in a jar, we’d suggest the following precautions: Wash your hands thoroughly or use a clean applicator wand for each use, and keep your cream in the fridge (bacteria grow more slowly in the cold).
Luke warm water is use to clean the oil and fats from the utensils as well as clothes. The same concept is placed over here. If you have oily skin, Luke warm water must be used to clean your face. The warm water will open your clogged pores of the skin and remove excess oil from your skin. Use a cotton ball dipped in warm water and rub over your skin to remove excess oil.
“Moisturizers help our skin barrier by providing lipids, protecting from external chemicals, and providing water to our sometimes parched skin. My all-time favorite moisturizer is of course virgin coconut oil.” — Vermén Verallo-Rowell, MD, of VMV Hypoallergenics

“Your skin acts as an excretory system to get rid of substances that don’t agree with your body. In the case of dairy, it is mucus-forming and can be difficult for the body digest—which is why many people are lactose intolerant. So when you get too much dairy for your body to digest, it may come out in the form of cystic acne (hard, painful bumps under the skin) on the chin and jawline area. The consumption of milk, cheese, and yogurt may become factors that influence endogenous hormones and mimic the hormones that trigger oil production in the skin to ignite the acne process. As soon as a cyst forms, dab on my cult-favorite Anti-Cyst Treatment ($43). It will dramatically reduce the infection and cut the healing time, at least by half. When used twice a week on areas prone to cysts, you may find they won’t show up at all! It’s one of my best skincare tips.” — Renée Rouleau, celebrity esthetician
Creams and lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids may help with fine lines, irregular pigmentation, and age spots. Side effects of alpha-hydroxy acids include mild irritation and sun sensitivity. For that reason, sunscreen should be used every morning.

Once my serum has soaked in I moisturize with the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream. It’s anti-inflammatory and always balances out any unsavory happenings. During this step, I look exactly like Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna when she bathes in the milk bath with her crown on but maybe possibly even better because I’m not sure she prepped as hard as I did for this.
