Face Oil: If your skin is extremely dry, you can swap your p.m. moisturizer for a nourishing face oil like Shiva Rose’s Face Oil ($105—you can read our full review about it) or Mun’s Brightening Youth Serum ($95), both of which are 100% organic and full of hydrating natural oils.
Testers found most of the creams delightfully soothing, with textures ranging from the thin serums of Dr. Dennis Gross and The Ordinary to the petroleum jelly consistency of Dermalogica. They typically came with light citrus smells, or no scent at all. Only one wrinkle cream stood out for the wrong reasons: Dermalogica’s Age Smart MultiVitamin Power Firm. Even uncapping the tube released the potent odor of overly sweet fruit. Our testers weren’t thrilled with the idea of smelling like Jolly Ranchers.
Housecleaning takes its toll on sensitive skin, since the chemicals in sprays and wipes can trigger irritation, says Julia March. Don’t throw in the towel (or call a cleaning lady), just concoct this all-purpose cleaner: Mix ½ cup vinegar and ¼ cup baking soda into 2 quarts water. For laundry, try dye-free detergents.
There’s an additional concern that’s more grounded, however. Retinoids degrade very quickly in the sunlight, losing their potency. More worryingly, the 2010 handbook of Cosmetic Dermatology Products and Procedures suggests that retinoids may release free radicals as they degrade — molecules that harm your skin rather than helping it. Because of this, the handbook concludes, “it is still recommended to avoid UV exposure when using topical retinoids” (312). Sunblock does slow retinoid degradation, according to a 2008 study, but the retinoids still degrade to some extent. Ultimately, this wasn’t a risk we felt comfortable taking. Until there’s been more extensive research on the topic, we’ve opted to skip all sunscreen-containing products.
“When choosing a cleanser, stay away from high-foaming cleansers, as they can strip the skin, leaving it tight, dry, and more prone to breakouts. It can even cause lines, wrinkles, and sensitivity to the environment. Instead, one of my most strategic skincare tips is to apply a pre-cleanser prior to cleansing to help thoroughly clean your skin without stripping your skin’s natural oil.” — Candace Noonan, esthetician and director of education at Environ Skin Care
Look for ingredients that will fight acne. If you have acne-prone skin, then you should be using tougher ingredients that will reduce oil, shine, and pimples. Some common and effective ingredients include:
Clay or mud masks: “These absorb oil and can have a mild exfoliating effect — so they’re great for oily areas. You don’t have to put it on your whole face, though. You can target just a few areas. In fact, I love multi-masking: using a clay on the t-zone and a hydrating one everywhere else.”
Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda.
Purpose: “After you cleanse so many times, your skin is in a fragile state,” explains Cho. “So you want to really hydrate it.” She also explains that toner acts as a way to prep the skin, so it’ll absorb the following treatments better.
Sleeping packs or overnight masks: “Overnight masks or sleeping packs will have a thicker texture and help trap in whatever ingredients you layer underneath. They’re ideal for mature skin or severely dry skin.”
“There’s been a renaissance in skin care products, particularly topical ones, which now include a number of ingredients to improve wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is one of those ingredients now available topically.”
Wrinkle creams with retinol or glycolic acid can leave skin scaly. Dr. Day recommends reaching for a facial scrubber once a week to remove dead skin cells: “I like the Clarisonic brush ($149; at ulta.com) because it only removes the cells that are ready to go. It doesn’t strip the top level, which is important for maintaining moisture and sun protection.”
Start with a serum containing antioxidants like vitamin C or E, resveratrol, or green tea. Over that, layer your moisturizer and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Redness due to rosacea can be minimized with Mirvaso, a new gel that decreases swelling of blood vessels. Hyperpigmentation can be reduced with creams containing 2 percent hydroquinone, phytophenol, or kojic acid.
Fights Acne: The natural antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties of this yellow-skinned fruit are beneficial for those who have acne and pimple-prone skin. Get rid of your blackheads with a simple mixture of lemon juice and honey.
Oil-Free Moisturizer: Lest you think your skin’s oil production warrants skipping moisturizer, know this: Your skin can actually get oilier when it’s dehydrated, by overcompensating. With this in mind, choose a light, oil-free moisturizer with sodium PCA and glycerin in the ingredient list—they’re humectants that will help your skin retain moisture. Our oily-skinned editor reaches for Intraceuticals’ Hydration Gel ($88) and Be the Skin’s Botanical Moisturizing Soothing Cream ($35).

Retinol is the crème de la crème (or cream, or serum) when it comes to anti-aging, but it can take some trial and error to find the one that works for you. For example, if you really think a retinol cream is right for you but you have sensitive skin, find a retinol formula targeted for sensitive skin (and we have a top recommendation in that category). If you have deeper wrinkles, look for a dropper or pen-type applicator that makes it easier to directly apply the product just where you need it.
“Prevention is the most important weapon against signs of aging because sun—which is avoidable—is responsible for 90% of skin aging. My favorite face sunscreen is Elta UV Physical Broad Spectrum SPF 41 because it doesn’t irritate even the most sensitive skin (we use it after procedures), it’s water-resistant, and has a transparent tint which is great for going sans makeup.”
This collagen night cream is AWESOME!! I use it on my face and hands in the morning and at night. It has made my pores appear almost invisible! I had a couple minor cuts on my hands and after 1 day of using this they were almost completely gone!! It seems to accelerate the healing process!! It also has a very fresh scent, not over-bearing!! I will definitely purchase this again. I did NOT receive any discount for my review, just so everyone knows!! You must try this cream! You will not be disappointed!!
The one thing we didn’t test for was results. Even high-quality wrinkle creams can take months of consistent use before you notice any changes. Instead, we looked for products offering the best combination of must-have ingredients, practical packaging, and no noxious smells.
Rinse your face in the morning. Since cleansers can strip your skin of good oils, you do not need to use them in the morning. Instead, rinse your face with warm water and pat dry. Wash your face with cleanser at night.
Apply a natural toner made from lemon juice and water. Fill a water bottle or other container with one part freshly squeezed lemon juice and five parts filtered water. Apply the lemon juice toner with a cotton ball and do not rinse off.

One easy way to de-stress your skin? Pare down your makeup routine so your pores can be exposed to actual oxygen. If you aren’t willing to go completely makeup-free, try using just concealer, lip balm and mascara—even if only on the weekend. Hey, the look is called “fresh-faced” for a reason!
Sometimes the food that you eat also plays a vital role in creating oil balance in your body. This article will discuss such remedies one after another. After availing such remedy you will feel like loving your oily skin tone instead of hating it. Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored and a pain to deal. The excess oil accumulated on the outer layer of the skin leads to the development of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and skin irritation.
Promising Review: “This product really works! My skin has never looked this clear! I saw the difference within a day on my new breakouts. By the next day, they were already disappearing and they didn’t come back!” —Brandy
a. Natural Cleanser: Packed with anti-inflammatory properties, the juice of this spice helps in easing your acne worries. A great natural cleanser, ginger juice can be applied regularly by those who have acne and pimples to clean and unclog their skin.
Verso’s treatment is a multi-step process which took a long time to get through. It’s definitely not as easy as using a one step cream in the morning and night. But the ingredients are high quality and it does contain retinol and fruit extract. Verso also added a fragrance to their treatment which some customers do not enjoy.*

For the sheet mask, I tried Amorepacific Moisture Bound Intensive Serum Masque, ($90, nordstrom). It was much thicker than most sheet masks I’ve used, but that meant it stayed on easily. And although it wasn’t dripping in serum like most, the tight seal made my skin feel tighter and plumper after removing. I also tried Skinfood Hydro Fitting Snail Mask Sheet ($13, amazon.com), which was incredibly moisturizing and plumping. Although this was packed with wet serum, it didn’t drip and absorbed fairly quickly.
The best skincare routine for dry skin typically contain products that keep skin hydrated. “Dry skin has a damaged moisture barrier,” Rouleau says. “Your skin has invisible cracks in it and it allows moisture to escape and irritants to get in more easily.”
Prevents Growth Of Facial Hair: South Indian women, in earlier days, used to apply a fine paste of turmeric powder mixed with water. They did this daily while bathing to prevent the growth of facial hair.
For your face: Use the mildest cleanser that does the job. Beware of that tight “squeaky-clean” feeling after washing. That feeling means you’ve removed too much of your natural oils and actually irritated your skin.
