This cult-favorite treatment is the only prescription-grade retinoid acne treatment you can get without making a visit to your dermatologist’s office. The formula minimizes and prevents blemishes while improving skin tone and texture. Apply a thin layer of it over your entire face between cleansing and moisturizing.
According to Refinery29, things like washing your face with hot water or applying acne medication to an unpopped pimple can cause redness, so it might be time to make an upgrade to your typical behaviors.
Vitamin A derivatives are key to anti-aging regimens, yet many women avoid them because they’re irritating. Dr. Day recommends building up tolerance by using a pea-size drop every other day. Or for a milder version, try Atralin ($192; by prescription). “It’s a gel base and gentler than thicker creams,” says San Francisco dermatologist Seth Matarasso. Whichever retinol you opt for, counter redness with an antioxidant-rich moisturizer like Revaléskin night cream with coffeeberry ($72; skinstore.com).
When we asked what those types of other ingredients are, Dr. Green said there were no clear answers there either — skin is too subjective. “I think the best answer is to use one that feels good and rubs into your skin well without over-drying it,” he says. The more comfortable it is to apply, the more likely you are to keep up the regimen.
The Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution is mostly water, but its 2 percent salicylic acid is enough to eat through oil and slough off the dead skin cells clogging your pores — and it boasts a higher concentration than nearly every other kit we looked at. It sloshes out quickly (so have your cotton balls at the ready), but stroking it over your face and neck per the instructions is pure heaven. It’s cooling on the skin and leaves a lingering tingle that never turns into a burn. Sodium hyaluronate, the super-moisturizing humectant we fell in love with in our review on the best face moisturizer, also caught our eye sitting smack dab in the middle of the ingredients list.
The face wash contains 2% salicylic acid for loosening dead skin around blackheads, but you rinse this skin-active ingredient down the drain almost as soon as you put the product on your face. The lotion also contains menthol, which can increase oil production on some types of skin. The daily toner also contains salicylic acid, but at a pH (2.3) – low enough actually to burn the skin. Even worse, the toner contains a large amount of isopropyl alcohol, which can dry out the skin. And the toner is also mostly alcohol.
All of Proactiv’s regimens are heavy on the benzoyl peroxide, and the Proactiv+ three-step kit is no different: a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide wash, a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide gel, and a 0.5 percent salicylic acid moisturizer.
Apply a homemade, natural face mask once or twice per week. Mash one ripe banana with one egg white and coat your face, neck and decolletage with the mixture. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.
Some over-the-counter skin care products contain hydroquinone. Your doctor can also prescribe a product with a higher concentration of hydroquinone if your skin doesn’t respond to over-the-counter treatments.
However, there is a small drawback of this product as well like every other product that is sold on the market. The ingredients are quite good, but the exact amounts of the ingredients are not revealed by the manufacturer.
Behold your ablutions, for instance. You’re never sure whether a specific body wash or soap will reduce or promote your acne. You think twice to use a harsh sponge or loofah to clear your body of dirt and bacteria, as it might irritate and worsen your body acne.
Fights Ageing: Packed with 40-plus antioxidant-rich compounds, Indian women can prevent premature skin ageing by using ginger. Detoxify your skin and boost the circulation levels to replenish the skin with nutrients essential for long lasting, youthful, glowing skin. The antioxidants fight against free radicals and maintain the elasticity and suppleness of the skin, thus delaying premature aging.
Our first plan was to look at it all — spot treatments, washes, scrubs, and creams — until we learned that when it comes to over-the-counter treatments, there is no one single cure. A 2013 study on acne vulgaris in The Nurse Practitioner concurred that, in most cases, a multidimensional approach to acne is necessary because most people have a combination of symptoms. Based on the advice of dermatologists and aestheticians, we turned our focus to regimen sets, analyzing the ingredients of more than 40 kits before finding our top picks.
“While using sunscreen is a given, my number on anti-aging recommendation for my patients is to use a product with an over-the-counter retinoid such as retinol or retinaldehyde, a direct precursor to retinoic acid, because it’s the single most important ingredient for repair, renewal, and the health of the skin.”
Salicylic acid is an effective ingredient for treating the bother-some bikini-line issue, but some women find it too harsh. As an alternative, Ji Baek suggests a facial toner like 3Lab’s Perfect Beautifying toner ($55; 3lab.com) with lavender extract to soothe bumps and minimize redness.

Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Get enough sleep, set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect.
Dry patches are a major pain when it comes to skincare. They look flaky, they’re tough to cover up with makeup, and they’re not always in the most flattering of spots. Random dryness can be a sign that your products may contain the wrong ingredients.
Injectable wrinkle fillers, unlike Botox injections that relax the muscle under a wrinkle, fill the line, crease, or area with one of several different substances. As a result, trouble spots nearly disappear.
The anti-wrinkle cream claims to supercharge skin and contains key ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, antioxidants and a rice peptide complex – all of which help to reduce fine lines and the dreaded crows feet.
We found the formula pleasantly lightweight when we tested it. It only took us about four drops to cover our entire faces, and the serum absorbs within a couple of minutes. Its scent is fairly light — you might have to focus to catch it, as opposed to Dermatologica’s knock-your-socks-off approach — and has herbal and medicinal tones that none of our testers objected to.
The product is marketed through their official website which is very informative and well-designed, containing background information about the Solvaderm company, full contact details, and additional skincare articles. They offer a free online skin consultation for customers and advice on choosing which Solvaderm products are right for their particular skin problems and type.

($8.49, (Shop Now), with a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment, such as Murad Acne Spot Fast Fix ($18, (Shop Now). If you’re still seeing zits, “visit your dermatologist to discuss prescription options, like birth control pills, oral spironolactone—which blocks oil—or topical Aczone 7.5 percent gel,” says Zeichner. “It’s shown to be particularly effective in adult women without causing irritation.” Oral contraceptives level out those hormone fluctuations, keeping your oil production normal and your skin clear.
Antioxidant Serum: Rouleau suggests looking for an antioxidant serum with brightening ingredients like licorice and vitamin C, to fade dark spots and discoloration. Korres’s Black Pine Firming, Lifting & Antiwrinkle Serum ($68) will brighten as well as plump fine lines and wrinkles with peptides, hyaluronic acid, and resveratrol.
If you have chronic eczema, research from Northwestern University shows that a very diluted bleach bath (about ½ cup for a full tub, which is weaker than the chemicals in a swimming pool) kills the surface bacteria that cause inflammation.
Pick soothing ingredients if you have irritation. Irritation and flaky skin can be common for both dry and sensitive skin types. To soothe your skin, pick products that contain moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe, chamomile, green tea extract, or Vitamin C.[17]
Like retinoids, peptides encourage the skin to regenerate. But they work even more slowly than retinoids, and are a more recent discovery with fewer clinical trials to support their efficacy. Their main draw is their gentleness: This is why, when we reviewed the best eye creams, we looked at a number of peptide formulas. But the skin around the rest of the face is less delicate than the very fragile eye area, so this isn’t a precaution most people need to take with a wrinkle cream. We opted to focus just on retinoid-based wrinkle creams.
People have been covering up their blemishes for centuries. In the 1600s, women wore star-and moon-shaped silk patches to hide their smallpox scars. Today, we use makeup to camouflage our pimples, but applying layer after layer of cover-up when you have acne isn’t necessarily the best approach. Makeup can be very good at hiding pimples, but it can also accentuate zits if you use the wrong kind of concealer or slather it on too thickly. The redness and peeling many acne treatments leave behind can look even worse when smeared with thick makeup.

To find the right product for your skin type and activities see how I rate the products on my Sunscreen Comparison Chart. My top picks for the most highly sensitive skin are the pure mineral zinc oxide products. If your skin is moderately sensitive then you will most likely tolerate any of the sunscreens that I use in my practice.
What’s Going On: If it’s big, red, and painful, you’re probably experiencing cystic acne, one of the more severe types. “Cystic pimples are caused by genetics and hormonal stimulation of oil glands,” says Zeichner. Not only are they large, but they’re also notoriously tough to treat. They often recur in the same place, because even if you manage to get rid of one, it can keep filling up with oil again and again, like an immortal pimple.

Hydration is your express lane to dewy, glowing skin, so it’s important to find a moisturizer that works for your skin type. They come in many forms—from an emulsion, lotion, gel, or cream—all of which work to seal in moisture to plump up skin and smooth away any fine lines. Pat a moisturizer into your face and neck morning and night every single day. On days when your skin feels extra parched, swap your regular moisturizer for a sleeping pack.
Consider boosters, serums, and ampoules as concentrated essences that directly treat the issues you’re most concerned about. Whether they target dull skin, large pores, pigmentation, wrinkles, or acne, serums are the ideal skin-perfecting step. Gently tap these into your skin!
Almonds are one of our favorite healthy snacks, and munching on them will help give you super skin. The naturally sweet nut is a good source of omega-3s (“good fats”) and vitamin E, two things that keep your skin cells plump and healthy.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been fascinated by the glamour that seems to come from simply being French. I always went straight for my mom’s Chanel lipstick when playing dress up — sorry, mom. And I never got tired of watching “Sabrina” where one trip to Paris (and a jaw dropping collection of Givenchy gowns) transforms Audrey Hepburn from the less-than-glamorous chauffeur’s daughter into a knockout.
The Erno Laszlo Anti-Blemish Beta Wash ($45, sephora.com) has an antiseptic ingredient that helps clear away the bacteria behind your breakouts. There’s also salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin. Consider this the sophisticated version of the acne wash you used as a teen.
Every day, it feels like there’s a new ingredient, technique, or product on the scene with a bevy of skincare tips to go along with it. Don’t get me wrong—I love innovation. Learning about skincare is one of my absolute favorite things to do. But there’s something to be said about the skincare tips that have become classics over the years. I reached out to a slew of top dermatologists and estheticians about the most effective, time-tested information they’ve learned throughout their careers.
