A balanced black skin care regimen must always include a daily moisturizer. Opt for moisturizers containing “humectrants,” or products that draw water to the skin. When choosing a moisturizer, choose one containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone or urea. Alcohol-free and scent-free moisturizes are best since those containing alcohols and perfumes irritate and dry out the skin. Products consisting of retinol or vitamin A should also be avoided as these rob the skin of moisture. Consider products containing natural ingredients including bees wax, soy oil and corn oil.
There’s an additional concern that’s more grounded, however. Retinoids degrade very quickly in the sunlight, losing their potency. More worryingly, the 2010 handbook of Cosmetic Dermatology Products and Procedures suggests that retinoids may release free radicals as they degrade — molecules that harm your skin rather than helping it. Because of this, the handbook concludes, “it is still recommended to avoid UV exposure when using topical retinoids” (312). Sunblock does slow retinoid degradation, according to a 2008 study, but the retinoids still degrade to some extent. Ultimately, this wasn’t a risk we felt comfortable taking. Until there’s been more extensive research on the topic, we’ve opted to skip all sunscreen-containing products.

Your bath or shower has the potential to either hydrate or dry out your sensitive skin. To make your shower or bath therapeutically hydrating, don’t strip your natural skin oils with hot water (remember that hot water cleans greasy dishes better than warm water). You may like to be tan, but you hurt your skin when it changes color from the sun or indoor tanning. UV exposure can make you more likely to get skin cancer — now or later.
