If you have acne-prone skin, use an oil-free spray sunscreen like Clarins Oil-Free spray SPF 15 ($30; at clarinsusa.com). Since it goes on as a fine mist, you’ll avoid spreading pore-clogging bacteria from your hands. Prone to ruddiness? Store products in a cooler when outside in the sun: Cold ingredients will constrict blood vessels and make your face look less flushed, says Dr. Evans.
Twice a week apply a tablespoon of full-fat sour cream to sensitive skin for 20 minutes, Julia March says. It will nourish touchy complexions that react badly to store-bought masks. According to Dr. Shamban, the lactic acid gently smooths skin and improves texture.
Don’t share makeup or makeup tools. Use fresh applicators when you try on makeup in stores. Don’t apply eyeliner inside your lid, because it may irritate your eye. If you’ve had an eye infection, buy new makeup so you don’t reinfect yourself. Never put on makeup in a car or on the bus. A bump or swerve could make you scratch your eye or get makeup and germs in it.
This rosewater spray is a classic in makeup bags everywhere—including Emma Watson’s. Simply spritz all over your face whenever you’re skin feels dehydrated, whether from a long flight or extra time spent in the sun.
The benefits include a longer-lasting effect. And at least one filler offers semi-permanent filling of lines and creases. Remember, products with longer-lasting effects are more likely to cause side effects. And when not used correctly, synthetic wrinkle fillers may cause disfigurement.
The skincare routine for sensitive skin needs to be nonirritating. “A lot of people think of sensitive skin as acne-prone, but I think of it as skin that gets red and irritated easily,” Rouleau says. “It’s more delicate skin that you can’t be aggressive with.”
What’s Going On: If it’s big, red, and painful, you’re probably experiencing cystic acne, one of the more severe types. “Cystic pimples are caused by genetics and hormonal stimulation of oil glands,” says Zeichner. Not only are they large, but they’re also notoriously tough to treat. They often recur in the same place, because even if you manage to get rid of one, it can keep filling up with oil again and again, like an immortal pimple.
This product is manufactured and promoted by StriVectin. This company is a reputed company that has a number of treatments and products related to anti-aging and various skin conditions under its belt. This product is designed for combating lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks on the skin.
Daily use. You’ll likely need to use the wrinkle cream once or twice a day for many weeks before noticing any improvements. And once you discontinue using the product, your skin is likely to return to its original appearance.
There’s an additional concern that’s more grounded, however. Retinoids degrade very quickly in the sunlight, losing their potency. More worryingly, the 2010 handbook of Cosmetic Dermatology Products and Procedures suggests that retinoids may release free radicals as they degrade — molecules that harm your skin rather than helping it. Because of this, the handbook concludes, “it is still recommended to avoid UV exposure when using topical retinoids” (312). Sunblock does slow retinoid degradation, according to a 2008 study, but the retinoids still degrade to some extent. Ultimately, this wasn’t a risk we felt comfortable taking. Until there’s been more extensive research on the topic, we’ve opted to skip all sunscreen-containing products.
All the hormonal and metabolic changes occur in the body while you are sleeping. So, the lack of sleep disrupts the body processes. Seven to eight hours of sleep is absolutely needed if you want a healthy skin. However, don’t oversleep as it can cause cell breakdown. Maintain balance. Fix your sleeping and waking timings. Sleep on a soft pillow and make sure the pillow cover is also soft.
Bless your wrinkles with a formula of nourishing chiuri butter which contains fatty acids to soften skin, Hyaluronic Acid, and the brand’s award-winning Frankincense Active Phyto Complex that has proven collagen protecting properties.
Make it a habit of drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water every single day. This is not just a common advice – water is essential for the proper functioning of the body. There is a fluid loss from the body due to evaporation, sweating, and urination. This loss needs to be compensated by drinking plenty of water and juices (and not soft drinks).
This gentle skin cleanser rinses off nicely, and cleanses your skin of dirt and bacteria without irritating. It is well-known and time-tested for its delicacy. Officially claimed to be tolerable for even baby skin.
When it comes to maintenance, proximity and convenience are key: Keep a little case with lip balm, cuticle oil, and hand and foot cream in your bedside table, and make a ritual of applying each one before going to sleep.
Fractional non-ablative laser: Beams of light penetrate the skin (creating a warm, but not burning, sensation) to generate cellular disruption, which triggers the body’s natural healing process to fight off lines and wrinkles. [Tria Beauty SmoothBeauty Laser, $495]
About 70 percent of the body is composed of water, which is required for various functions like digestion, respiration, absorption, circulation, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of normal body temperature. When you are low on water, the brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism. Water is a zero-calorie beverage, and drinking it is the safest way to lose weight.
These three ingredients work together to enhance* your skin health. Hyaluronic Acid helps in moisturizing and tightening your skin; Argireline helps in smoothening wrinkles and fine lines while Matrixyl 3000 and collagen work together to give your skin a youthful appearance.
What to look for : Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer labeled “non-comedogenic” — which is just a fancy way of saying that it won’t clog your pores. Also look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which hold moisture in the skin. What to avoid? Heavy, greasy products that contain pimple-producing ingredients such as cocoa butter, mineral oil, or cold cream.
The product Stemuderm is a concentrated anti-aging formula that is made by the company Solvaderm. Solvaderm is one of the reputed companies with a strong past record. This product is marketed via its official website, which is very professionally designed.
However, the skin may not get tons of benefits from anti-aging components of anti-aging products if you use the product in your 20s. With that said, there is no harm in using the product and there is no such thing as a right age.
Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe. Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect.
Remember this home remedy the next time you get a big pimple: Do several cycles of hot compresses, then apply a glob of 1 percent hydrocortisone cream, like Aveeno hydrocortisone anti-itch cream ($6; at drugstore.com, and let it sit for two hours. “It’s very similar to getting a shot of hydrocortisone to deflate the bump,” says Dr. Fusco.
Not really. A simple washcloth really does most of the work. But who needs a spa appointment when the latest skin-care gadgets — and one surprisingly analog standby — bring the same technology to your bathroom?
I’m so glad you included Sukin. I’ve been using their soap-free bodywash for a year now as I get very sore skin on my legs and torso during the winter and it’s brilliant – it’s the only thing my skin will tolerate when it’s really bad, it’s great value as a little goes a long way and its green credentials are very impressive too.
Insider tip: Apply masks after serum but before moisturizer, unless it’s a leave-on overnight mask, which can take the place of your nighttime moisturizer. Like any product that supplements your regular routine, masks should be used in moderation — no more than once a week to prevent any irritation, Dr. Zeichner says.
Don’t have time to get a real glow? You can still look radiant with the simple combo of blush, highlighter under your eyes and a little Smith’s Rosebud Salve on the contours of your face. Bam! Instant skin pick-me-up.
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are usually derived from fruits (like apples and oranges) or sugars. They are exfoliation powerhouses, and multiple studies have demonstrated their effectiveness in improving the look of aging skin.

My Experience: Toner was always a skin-care step I skipped. It was after talking to Cho that I really came to appreciate this part of the routine, especially when partaking in such extensive cleansing. I tried Whamisa Organic Flowers Deep Rich Essence Toner ($40, amazon.com). At the beginning of the week, I used a cotton round to pat the product into my skin because the consistency is very runny. But by day five, I was just pouring the liquid into my palms. Once I realized that it wasn’t just water (which is how it seemed at first) I didn’t want to waste any of the product that would soak into the cotton.
If your favorite day cream doesn’t contain sunscreen, mix it with a lightweight SPF lotion like Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF 30 ($43; at dermalogica.com). Look for micronized zinc, Avobenzone, or Helioplex, says N.Y.C. dermatologist Rosemarie Ingleton. They offer broad-spectrum protection without leaving a purple or whitish cast.
Take care of your gorgeous skin and keep it smooth and hydrated all year round. Whatever your skin type, cleansing, hydrating and exfoliating on a regular basis can help to maintain a healthy balance. Try our aloe soothing day cream to hydrate skin that needs gentle care or reduce the appearance of fine lines with our vitamin e eye cream.
Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you – it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin.
I’m done. At this point, I just lunge my entire body horizontal onto the hardwood floors and belly slide like a baby seal all the way to my bed. Consider applying just one or five more layers of lip balm. The control variable in this freak show is my morning routine which consists of America’s sweetheart duo: Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser and Priming Moisturizer Rich to keep things consistent and carefree. I would tell you about my airplane routine but we’ll take a raincheck on that for my future Youtube channel.
Like retinoids, peptides encourage the skin to regenerate. But they work even more slowly than retinoids, and are a more recent discovery with fewer clinical trials to support their efficacy. Their main draw is their gentleness: This is why, when we reviewed the best eye creams, we looked at a number of peptide formulas. But the skin around the rest of the face is less delicate than the very fragile eye area, so this isn’t a precaution most people need to take with a wrinkle cream. We opted to focus just on retinoid-based wrinkle creams.
Stress sets off hormones that cause acne, so make time to wind down. Find a hobby, says David Bank, a N.Y.C. dermatologist. (Amanda Seyfried knits.) Less stress increases oxygen flow, minimizing flare-ups.
Writer Molly Young loves this coconut-scented body lotion so much, she buys it in bulk and keeps the stockpile in her refrigerator: “I found it as a youth living in a hippie town in Northern California, where the local co-op stocked eight-ounce bottles of Skin Trip alongside tofu sandwiches, yogurts made from unconventional milks, natural deodorants, and Nag Champa incense. The substance inside is thinner than most lotions — it doesn’t ooze like toothpaste when you give the bottle a squeeze but instead pools liquidly into your palm. What this means is, when you spread Skin Trip onto your desired skin region, it sinks in quickly and leaves no evidence behind. Your skin is left nourished and faintly coconut-scented.”
Clearasil is one of the best known names in acne care. A foaming, peach acne cream squeezed out of a tube, Clearasil was the most popular acne care product for tens of millions of Americans in the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s. In fact, for most Americans, it was the only acne care product for decades before other treatments reached the market.

Apply serum. This skin care product is very popular for a reason. Serums generally are concentrated formulas that target specific skin issues (think fine lines and wrinkles or dark spots). Serum should be applied after cleansing but before putting on moisturizer. Got fine lines and wrinkles? Try the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power™ Concentrated Serum, which is formulated with hyaluronic acid to help improve the appearance of fine lines with continued use over time. Got dark spots? Consider using the L’Oréal Paris Youth Code™ Dark Spot Correcting & Illuminating Serum Corrector. Sadly, daily UV exposure and age can result in the appearance of dark spots on skin’s surface. This serum works to help correct and fade the appearance of dark spots over time. Finally…
There are two big guns used to take down acne, and they’re both great at doing entirely different things. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that comes from willow bark and works primarily as an exfoliator, breaking down fatty acids like sebum so your pores don’t clog. (Glycolic acid works similarly, but is less effective.) These acids do their thing on comedones — whiteheads, blackheads, and other non-red bumps.

“You unfortunately cannot determine the strength of a product strictly by the percentage of its active ingredients because how well a product works depends on how well its inactive ingredients help it penetrate the skin,” explains Dr. Green. “In other words, a 2 percent benzoyl peroxide may be more effective than another brand’s 5 percent benzoyl peroxide because there are other ingredients helping out.”

“Another great at-home treatment is lymphatic drainage massage to keep skin clear, de-puffed, and glowing. For dry skin, massage in circular motions upward. Start at the base of the neck where your arteries are. Massage in gentle circles upwards, toward the jaw, up the sides of the face, and around the eyes. This will help coax nutrients into the tissue. You want to do the opposite motion and start on the top of the face by the eyes if you are prone to breakouts—this will draw the waste away. Lymphatic drainage massage can completely change the look of someone’s face and is a great, under-the-radar skincare tip.” — Joanna Vargas
You don’t always have to exfoliate (especially if you have sensitive skin), but keep in mind that exfoliating at least twice a week is crucial for clear, polished skin. Sloughing off dead skin cells makes it possible for the rest of your skin care products to mingle with your pores and do their magic. Gently massage or tap an exfoliant into your skin for smooth and silky skin.
When you do any physical activity, the blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all the cells, including your skin cells, and makes them healthy. Exercise also helps remove cellular debris and free radicals from the body and cleanses it from within. Sometimes, stress causes the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum, and this triggers skin problems like eczema and acne. Exercise helps to de-stress, and this keeps skin problems at bay. More importantly, exercise tones your body and makes you look beautiful.
Moisture in the air helps skin look dewy, so keep hydrated year-round with a humidifier, says Dr. Colbert. Air-o-Swiss’s office-friendly Cool Mist Travel Ultrasonic ($50; airoswiss.net) attaches to a half-liter water bottle.
