Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Set aside a few hours over the weekend (or a Monday night, if you can swing it), slather on a moisturizing face mask like Kiehl’s Algae Masque, $27, and take a hot bubble bath. Once you’ve emerged from your Mr. Bubble-induced bliss, wash off the mask and moisturize with face cream or oil. You’ll be amazed at how calming your own bathroom can be!
Look for ingredients that will fight acne. If you have acne-prone skin, then you should be using tougher ingredients that will reduce oil, shine, and pimples. Some common and effective ingredients include:[10]
The key to not looking tired? It’s…not being tired! Easier said than done, we know. Do whatever you can to get in seven to eight hours a night and your skin—including those pesky undereye bags!—will look noticeably better. Trust us: Sleep offers the kind of results that no face cream can mimic.
Why God, why? Is flawless skin just too much to ask for? A late night leads to dark circles in the morning. Got an upcoming party? Oh wait, I spy a zit. Yes yes, we are well aware of the basic CTM technique… Cleanser-Toner-Moisturizer. We try every new face wash, sunscreen, anti-ageing cream that hits the market. If dry skin and dead skin, oily skin and patchy skin weren’t enough – you now have combination skin! And we are ever so willing to try anything under the sun to get beautiful skin. But it is not an overnight miracle.
I started using the collagen cream last Thursday when it was delivered and I see a difference in the scar already. The scar is not as deep as before I started using the cream. I will updat my review as I see changes. The cream has also faded the dark spots on the back of my hands some and made them very soft, more than any hand or body lotion has ever.
Impatience for acne to be better right now usually results in less-than-healthy habits. Your pimples need TLC too. That 2013 study on acne vulgaris found that, in an attempt to dry out acne lesions, patients often use too many products or apply excessive amounts to problem areas, resulting in further irritation and overdrying the skin. Vigorous scrubbing and using harsh exfoliants (remember that St. Ives Apricot Scrub we were all crazy about in the early 2000s?) can make acne worse by rupturing whiteheads and blackheads, and turning them into painful red ones. And remember: No matter how satisfying it is, picking and popping your zits will also increase their inflammation and opportunity for infection. Resist!

Experts agree that price is no indicator of the overall effectiveness of wrinkle creams. In fact, many of the best wrinkle creams can be found at the drugstore — and we encountered more reviews for these affordable brands than we did for expensive department-store wrinkle creams. Although many of those pricey products feel more luxurious on the skin, experts say the vast majority work no better than budget formulas with the same active ingredients.
Over the past couple of years Good Housekeeping has put a number of wrinkle creams to the test — both in the lab and on the faces of testers. Products that did well in both metrics are named the best of the bunch, and that was very helpful to us in making our decisions. And, as always, Beautypedia, run by beauty products expert Paula Begoun helps to narrow — or sometimes widen — the field even further.
Our two overall favorites are Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution ($88) and, if you can afford it, La Prairie Cellular Power Charge Night ($530). Out of 112 products, these were the only two that met all of our criteria. They contain retinoids and exfoliants to undo wrinkles and keep skin looking young and healthy, plus sodium hyaluronate — a super-charged moisturizer that helps skin stay plump and hydrated. Because retinoids, in particular, are extremely fragile and degrade easily, we appreciated that both formulas also use packaging that minimizes exposure to light, air, and dirty fingers.
The most basic function of a moisturizer is to hydrate and soften the skin. “Essentially, moisturizers assist in preventing water loss through the outer layers of skin,” Dr. Charles explains. “They can also complement the naturally found protective oils and other building blocks within the skin, such as ceramides.” This is one product that doctors recommend using year-round, for all skin types. “Skin naturally loses the ability to retain moisture as we age,” Dr. Nazarian insists, “and daily activities, such as washing, can strip natural hydrators from the surface.”
• Ferment Extract. It often comes with a scary long sciencey word in front of it (pseudoalteromonas), but it is an all-natural Peptide loaded with essential Amino Acids that may serve to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Scientists used 3D optical measurements to see an effect on skin creases compared to the placebo, and results show great potential.*7 Peptides in general have been found to be potentially important in helping improve your skin, however the research is still very new.*8
Promising Review: “These are great for everyday, as well as on the go. I keep about four of them at any given time so I always have them for daily face cleansing. But I do not use them more than one per day to avoid drying out my face.” —Lovinlife
From essences to sheet masks, Korean beauty products and trends are taking over the American beauty market. Everyone is talking about the 10-step routine that is popular among the skin-centric women of Seoul. But it’s a total exaggeration. The first thing I learned when taking on this experiment: A week on a Korean skin-care regimen does not mean a 10-step process every day.
You can dry your skin by washing it too much, so once a day is fine for most people. In the morning, rinse your face with lukewarm water. Use a soft towel to pat it dry. At night, wash with a cleanser or gentle soap gets rid of the day’s dirt and makeup. If you exercise, play sports, or have PE, you may want to wash your face afterward with a gentle cleanser. Sweat can clog your pores and make acne worse.
“Here’s the sad news about the neck for those in their 20s: While you have the wisdom of caring for your skin better than your mother did (due to more awareness and better products available now than ever before), with technology more so embraced by younger people, you are creating what is known as ‘tech neck.’ The 45-degree angle that you hang your head to look at your cell phone causes a repeated squishing of the neck, resulting in premature folds and wrinkles. To treat neck this, most people know to apply moisturizer to the neck, and many do this, but the mistake is made in treating the neck as an afterthought. This particularly applies with sunscreen, since the number one cause of premature skin aging is UV rays given off from the sun. The best way to apply sunscreen to this area is by doing a full second application exclusively to the neck. If you have sensitive, oily, acne-prone skin and require a sunscreen that dries to a matte finish, use Renée Rouleau Daily Protection SPF 30 With 7% Zinc Oxide ($38). In addition to sunscreen, be sure to apply your serums and moisturizers in an upward motion to go against gravity.” — Renée Rouleau
Retinoids are one of the most well-documented wrinkle fighters around, reversing the signs of aging in study after study (after study). A class of chemicals derived from vitamin A, retinoids work in two ways: First, they help your skin slough off old cells and make new ones — a process our bodies are good at when young, but which slows down as we age. Second, they spur collagen production, improving elasticity and filling in lines — another natural process that tends to slow down with age.
Once you’ve applied face cream, it’s time to lock in that moisture with an oil. This pick from Drunk Elephant is anti-aging as well as hydrating. It’s also high in antioxidants that fight pollution and free radicals. So, yeah, it kind of does a little bit of everything.

“I often explain this concept to patients by giving the analogy of our minds being like a computer that need to be rebooted every night so as to process everything we put into them. Seven to eight hours of sleep allows this to happen.” — Vermén Verallo-Rowell, MD
It is a specialized anti-acne cleanser. So, if you only have occasional blackheads or whiteheads here and there, and you’re primarily after keeping your skin clean and clear, this product might be an overkill for your condition.
This magical thick mixture will prove to be a gem for your skin. Not only will the goodness of yogurt reflect on your oily pores but it will help fight the problem quite effectively. Honey on the other hand, will help tighten your skin and protect it from developing further breakouts or acne. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties will come into play, make sure you’re using raw honey. Oats will lighten the skin complexion and give it a smooth supple effect.

Traditional advice holds that you should only wear a retinoid cream at night, when there’s obviously no need to wear sunscreen. Retinoids applied during the day were once believed to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and more prone to burning and peeling. But current research suggests this isn’t true, and that the retinoids themselves are the reason that your skin may feel tender.
I’m a big fan of hydrolyzed collagen in moisturizers. It refines the skin surface and gives it a beautiful texture. It also tends to only be in the more expensive creams so I was excited to find this. Immediately after I spread it over my clean face my skin turned bright red as though I had a bad sunburn. My face also heated up to a very uncomfortable level. It died down after an hour or so but why use something that hurts? I had to cover my face with straight aloe vera gel to calm it down. I also felt that it was too light weight for my 63 year old complexion.

We truly did enjoy Dr. Dennis Gross’s Ferulic Acid + Retinol Anti-Aging Moisturizer — it’s the cousin cream to our top pick serum. It has a rich creamy texture that absorbs quickly, and a gentle orange scent. Like our two top picks, it has retinoids, AHAs, and sodium hyaluronate, which means that it will fight wrinkles by encouraging your skin to regenerate more quickly,, while also moisturizing and plumping your skin. This cream is packaged in a jar, but it’s also less expensive than our two top picks, retailing at $75.
With an SPF of 30, Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream “may be the only product you need in your morning skincare routine,” according to testers at Good Housekeeping. Regular users find that it diminishes wrinkles while firming and brightening the complexion. The broad-spectrum formulation provides protection from sun damage, while packing in plenty of anti-aging ingredients. The smooth, light texture makes an excellent base for makeup. Olay’s Micro-Sculpting Cream is appropriate for all skin types.
“Avoid the sun, and when you can’t avoid it, wear sunscreen and a hat. I swear by Coolibar sun protective clothing and Colorescience Sunforgettable Loose Mineral Sunscreen Powder ($64).” — Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care
In the days before your period, swapping out your regular cleanser for one with antibacterial benzoyl peroxide (BP) like the Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser can keep zits from cropping up, says Robert Anolik, a dermatologist in New York City. (If you find it too drying, use it only on your lower face to target impending zits.) But, again, he stresses, “even if you knock out bacteria and unclog pores, hormonal acne will often persist without the help of birth-control pills.” While Anolik prefers BP for pimple prevention, once bumps arise, he likes salicylic acid (in both spot treatments like this and masks) for its unparalleled ability to free up pores and temper swelling.
This product is manufactured and promoted by StriVectin. This company is a reputed company that has a number of treatments and products related to anti-aging and various skin conditions under its belt. This product is designed for combating lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks on the skin.
Promising Review: “This is much cheaper than other drying lotion brands. Dries out an open acne wound. Just be sure not to shake it. Insert a cotton swab all the way to the pinkish-orange part, and apply it on top of the pimple. It should accelerate the healing process after one or two uses.” —Raychelle
This is perhaps the only Lakme foundation for oily skin in the Lakme range. The new Lakme invisible finish foundation blends perfectly with your skin and provides a full coverage for a matte and flawless invisible finish. This foundation is water based and thus is light weight. It has a SPF 8 and is available in 6 shades.
Don’t overdo it. It can be tempting to layer on lots of cream, especially if you’re excited about trying out a new product. But everyone’s sensitivity to retinol and AHAs is different, so it’s best to be cautious until you know how well your skin will tolerate the product. Dr. Ford recommends a graduated approach: “We tell our patients to begin using retinol on Mondays and Thursdays for a few weeks, then up it to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a few more weeks, and eventually you’ll just be taking weekends off. Some people can tolerate these products every day of the week.”
Injectable wrinkle fillers can give you a more youthful look for a fraction of what a traditional facelift costs. Most will fill hollows, lines, and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes with results that can last from 4 months to more than a year.
Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.
How long the results last varies from several months to over a year or two. Some research shows that repeated injections may help stimulate the body’s own natural production of collagen. That will help reduce the number of lines and wrinkles. There is also some evidence that less filler is needed over time to achieve the same look.
“Red wine is the natural source for resveratrol, as it is rich in grape skin and seeds. I use this at night to improve skin pigmentation (it does this by lowering tyrosinase levels) and in my patients who have a little bit of adult female acne and redness, it works beautifully as a nighttime antioxidant to improve skin. It has also been shown to improve skin thickness without a drying effect seen in retinols. In terms of mechanism of action, resveratrol can bind specific polyphenol binding sites in the epidermis which can be used to prevent signs of aging.”
Finally, for a skincare routine for older skin, your main goal is to plump up wrinkles, banish dark spots, and lift sagging. Rouleau says that your skin regimen will be similar to that of those with dry skin, with a few small differences.
Benzac Intensive Spot Treatment ($12, target.com) is the best spot treatment we’ve ever used, which is some seriously high praise. Not only does it contain the classic salicylic acid, which exfoliates and decreases inflammation, says Dr. Bowe, but it also contains sandalwood oil to calm inflammation and counteract any dryness from the active ingredients. This treatment is a major steal: It’s super affordable and it works on every type of zit including blackheads, whiteheads, and even angry papules.
A couple of affordable and readily available drugstore brands landed in this category. They contain retinoids and AHAs, the two most important anti-wrinkle ingredients. All they lack is sodium hyaluronate — our favorite moisturizer. An easy work-around is to add a face moisturizer to your routine — preferably one that does contain sodium hyaluronate. (Our top picks for best face moisturizer both feature it, if you need a recommendation.)
