There are different kinds of retinoids, and they vary in strength. As cosmetic chemist Kevin Gallagher explained, this strength comes with a trade-off: the stronger the retinoid, the faster it works — and the harsher it is on skin. The strongest retinoids are only available with a prescription. But that’s not to say over-the-counter formulations are ineffective. A three-month, double-blind, randomized study of 34 women showed there was no significant difference in efficacy between an over-the-counter 1.1 percent retinol cream and 0.025 percent prescription tretinoin. In short: Retinoids work.
There are a variety of anti-wrinkle creams on the market, and the results of each cream greatly depend on the individual’s specific skin care needs. Anti-wrinkle creams that contain all-natural ingredients fare better than many creams that contain filler ingredients, and certain fragrances.
When you’re tired, it can be tempting to go to bed without washing your face. But leaving makeup on your skin can clog your pores and cause acne. So wash it off with a gentle cleanser or makeup remover. Use a soft wash cloth or cotton pads. If you use acne medicine, now’s a good time to put it on — when your face is clean and you won’t be putting on makeup.
Simple alcohols destroy the skin’s barrier, called the acid mantle, which is what keeps your skin’s pH in its happy place (and your skin blemish-free). “A lot of products that are marketed to treat acne do not maintain — or even consider the importance of — the skin’s acid mantle,” explains Natarsha Bimson, a Los Angeles-based aesthetician. “It’s a huge issue.” In one study, even a small, 3 percent alcohol solution applied to skin cells over the course of two days increased cell death by 26 percent — in some acne treatments, like Kate Somerville’s EradiKate, alcohol is one of the first ingredients listed, meaning it’s a largely alcohol-based formula.
Keep it up with the broad-spectrum SPF 30 hydrator; for an extra boost of protection from environmental aggressors like pollution and UVA/UVB rays, layer a vitamin C serum underneath. (It can also help with hyperpigmentation, says Linder.) Look for one containing at least 15 to 20 percent L-ascorbic acid, the most effective form of the vitamin. A facial oil is a good way to moisturize and add back your glow, says Marmur. It has some light-reflective qualities and drenches the skin, plumping it and temporarily diminishing fine lines. Just don’t forget to add sunscreen.
In every case, introducing a retinol into your night regimen will normalize your skin, encouraging it to shed and rebuild in a healthier way. “Retinols are fantastic multitaskers, proven to clear pimples and fade the marks they leave behind,” explains New York City dermatologist Doris Day. The vitamin A derivatives can be irritating, but this version contains a tolerable .1 percent of the over-the-counter retinaldehyde. Ease in by using yours just two or three nights a week and topping it with one of those inflammation-curbing oils we mentioned earlier. (As skin adjusts, up the frequency, adding one night each week.)
Retinol Serum: Rouleau recommends incorporating an over-the-counter retinol serum into your regimen five nights a week. “I prefer serums over creams because they have smaller molecules and can better penetrate the skin,” she says. Some of our favorite retinol serums for dry skin include Peter Thomas Roth’s Retinol Fusion PM ($65) and Chantecaille’s Retinol Intense Cream ($110).

One word of caution, though: Dr. Lawrence Green, board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at George Washington University, warns that even moderate acne can be beyond what an over-the-counter treatment can handle, and recommends seeing a specialist. Our advice: Track your progress while using any over-the-counter treatments, and consider consulting a doctor if your skin continues to worsen or not improve after one month.
Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself. A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.
