Ever wondered why your doctor always recommended you to have an apple a day? Well, because of a ton of associated benefits that it comes with, apples are rich in minerals, vitamins, and infused with properties that are extremely beneficial for people with oily skin. You can cut an apple into slices and rub them against your skin till it stops producing oil. Repeat this several times a week for effective results.
The face finale is my ride-or-die: Georgia Louise Sleeping Beauty Oil, I love you so much. Seriously, I love you so much. In my [un]professional opinion, beauty oils are the key to age-defying youth. I always rationalize spending my cold hard cash monies on the best oil that I can because this is the most critical part for me. I live and breathe for this moment. While I’m pressing a few drops of this into my skin, I’m also repeating powerful words of self-love in my head. I’m always grateful for the nightly skincare journey, but honestly, always so happy once I’ve reached my destination.
If you have both pimples and blackheads, this Clearasil product may be a good choice. It contains both benzoyl peroxide to kill the bacteria in pimples and glycolic acid to break up the “glue” that holds dead skin cells tight around blackheads. The claim made in advertising that it can get rid of pimples in four hours or less may be an overstatement, but you definitely should see changes in 24 hours. Don’t expect full resolution of blemishes in less than a week, however. Like the other popular Clearasil products, it is too strong to use all over your face.
Keep your skin healthy by eating smart. Fill your plate with veggies, fruits, and whole grains. Choose lean proteins like chicken, fish, lean meat, beans, and eggs. Avoid foods that are high in cholesterol, trans fats, saturated fats, salt, and sugar. Get plenty of sleep to avoid dark circles, fine lines, dull skin, and other side effects of bad rest. Relax! Even stress can make you break out. And stay hydrated.
Visit a dermatologist. If you are struggling to find products that work for your skin, visit a dermatologist. They can help you identify your skin type while pinpointing the underlying issues that may be causing your concerns. They may even give you prescriptions that can help.
One of the greatest things about following a skin-care regimen or routine is that it can actually be a lot of fun, as well as a source of comfort. It’s a time for taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally.
Toner: Avoid ingredients like SD alcohol 40, denatured alcohol, ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol. “These [ingredients] are commonly found in toners and should be avoided,” Rouleau cautions. Try Cremorlab’s Mineral Treatment Essence ($42) for a boost of energizing, brightening hydration.
“We consider treatment steps to be anything between toning and moisturizing. Layering your serums and essences from thinnest to thickest helps the skin to absorb each layer most efficiently! Try it with an ultra-lightweight essence like the Earth’s Recipe Dual Hydrating Liposome ($48), following up with the Blithe Tundra Chaga Pressed Serum ($49).” — Sarah Lee and Christine Chang, founders of Glow Recipe
NEW DELHI: Binging on organic food is good to get rid of toxins in our bodies but it is also important to pay attention on what you apply on your body. Cleansers, toners, moisturisers, oils and serums are part of the larger skincare regime, hence right ingredients in these products play an equally important role, suggest experts.
* A toner can help unclog pores as well. It is a great addition to your beauty regime. Neem is an excellent skin toner that helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. It also lightens dark spots making your skin look soft and glowing.
Retin-A may cause your skin to become very red and dry, and may cause peeling. Newer medications have milder side effects. You should ask your doctor to switch your medication if you suffer some of these side effects.
What to look for : Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer labeled “non-comedogenic” — which is just a fancy way of saying that it won’t clog your pores. Also look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which hold moisture in the skin. What to avoid? Heavy, greasy products that contain pimple-producing ingredients such as cocoa butter, mineral oil, or cold cream.

I have a scar on my cheek from what both the dermatologist and I thought was skin cancer. I got lucky and it wasn’t cancer! I do have a scar from it and the biopsy that is a partial circle with uneven edges on it. The scar has a depth of above 25mm.
Is peach not your color? This Clearasil product offers 10% benzoyl peroxide for killing acne bacteria fast, without the familiar peach tint. It’s great for killing acne bacteria fast, but like the tinted version of Clearasil, it can also cause itching, peeling, burning, and stinging if it is applied to unblemished skin. This product also retails for US $6.99 for 1 oz/28 grams.
Pick soothing ingredients if you have irritation. Irritation and flaky skin can be common for both dry and sensitive skin types. To soothe your skin, pick products that contain moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe, chamomile, green tea extract, or Vitamin C.
For this skin type, use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol or fragrances. Those ingredients can dry you out even more. Gently wash your skin, then rinse with plenty of warm water. Don’t use hot water — it removes the natural oils from your face faster. Try exfoliating once a week to get rid of flaky skin cells. It will make your skin look clearer and more even.
Glycolic Acid Product: When it comes to keeping your normal skin normal, Rouleau suggests incorporating glycolic acid into your routine a few times a week. “This is an [alpha-hydroxy acid] that is favored because it has the smallest molecular structure and can absorb deeper within the skin,” Rouleau explains. “This helps to dissolve surface dry skin cells to encourage brighter, more even-toned, smoother skin.” Try Dr. Dennis Gross’s Alpha Beta Peel ($48) for easy, on-the-go smoothing and brightening.
My Experience: One thing I was dying to include during this experimental week was the Blithe Patting Splash Mask ($45, sephora.com). The watery texture tricked me into thinking the product would just run down my face, which wouldn’t give it any time to sink in or have a noticeable effect. But damn Daniel, that was not the case! I tried it twice, both times in the shower since I didn’t want to “splash” all over my clothes or bathroom counter. I poured a cap full of the Green Tea mask thinking I was in for a nice calming green tea treatment. But after patting onto my skin, I could really feel the active ingredients against my skin. It was clear this product is a seriously potent mix of ingredients (and that explains why it only takes 15 seconds to work). The first time, I got too close to my eyes, and I couldn’t even open them because of the stinging. By my second attempt, I learned my lesson.
Fights Pimples: Packed with antibacterial properties, it makes a wonderful friend for those suffering with pimple troubles. Regular application of a mixture of besan and fenugreek powder is known to aid in eliminating unwanted facial hair.
Same here man. I tried Proactiv, Clean and Clear, everything I found at Wallgreens and Walmart. What I found to help is standard benzoyl peroxide and a pill called Wipeout. I bought it at the stopacnefast website. Instead of shrinking the glands like Accutane, it stops oil production, stopping the acne. Stuff works wonders.
The best acne products are essential for adults suffering from bad skin. That’s when this list of the best acne products — along with the ones you should avoid — becomes especially handy. With it, we can navigate the endless acne treatment options out there and hone in on the best acne products that will help us treat everything from cystic acne and the occasional monster zit to chin acne or recurring breakouts.
We consider ourselves quite the skincare fanatics here at Byrdie HQ—it’s hard not to be when our desks look like they could be featured in an episode of Hoarders: Skincare Edition (currently in the process of pitching that idea to A&E). However, we are well aware that our plight is a unique one and that the average woman is more concerned about what to use on her face rather than where to store her eighth cleanser of the week.
Promising Review: “I started using this moisturizer when I took acne medication that dried out my skin. The formula is lightweight and oil-free. I have used this product for several years now and would recommend it for anyone who has troublesome skin!” —Rebecca Rice

Oily skin is more vulnerable to breakouts, acne and pimple for it tends to produce excessive oil on the surface. To get rid of this excessive oily skin problem, use aloe vera gel or aloe vera extract which will help absorb the oil and treats your acne, pimple, zits and blemishes. Make sure you carefully remove the extract from the leaf as it has pointed spikes, You can further mix it with lemon juice drops for an effective home remedy to fight against oily skin problem.
a. Natural Cleanser: Packed with anti-inflammatory properties, the juice of this spice helps in easing your acne worries. A great natural cleanser, ginger juice can be applied regularly by those who have acne and pimples to clean and unclog their skin.
“Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies.
Our one mild quibble is that Dr. Dennis Gross Brightening Solution is not strictly a cream — it’s a serum, with a thin, oil-like consistency. If you like the skin-feel of lotion or thick cream, you may want to consider either La Prairie or one of our not-quite-perfect runners-up below. That said, we found the formula easy to apply. The angled dropper allows you to precisely deposit small drops onto your face or finger and then rub it in. The package also includes a wrapped stack of microfiber pads if you’d prefer to apply this way.
To repair and protect, look for a serum rich in antioxidants, like vitamin C or E, or epidermal growth factors to help stimulate collagen production, says Jackson. (If you’ve become particularly concerned about your eye area, give your eye cream an extra boost with a specialized serum containing the same ingredients.) Over that, layer a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 moisturizer.
The one thing we didn’t test for was results. Even high-quality wrinkle creams can take months of consistent use before you notice any changes. Instead, we looked for products offering the best combination of must-have ingredients, practical packaging, and no noxious smells.
Whilst we applaud those who embrace growing old gracefully, we also know the importance of protecting ageing skin from all the nasties out there – pollution, dirt, and of course the sun’s damaging rays.
in the past, i regularly used the neutrogena stress control cream cleanser. it felt very refreshing and cooling to the skin, but it was terrible at removing my makeup (especially around the eyes) so i had to use another facial wash afterwards. My dermatologist recommended Citrus Clear, because I wanted a natural product to help with the acne. i was pleasantly surprised to see my face and not a raccoon staring back at me in the mirror!! if it can remove my mascara and eyeliner, i know it removes a lot of other impurities too. i have mild acne and since i’ve been washing with Citrus Clear twice a day (anymore than that will dry out your skin), i’ve noticed significant improvement in my skin.
Radical’s anti-aging serum contains a clean, safe and effective blend of ingredients that aim to help improve the look of skin. It’s free from many of the harsh chemicals that are found in cosmetics and the company seems very reliable.*
Shave carefully. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it.
Benzac Intensive Spot Treatment ($12, target.com) is the best spot treatment we’ve ever used, which is some seriously high praise. Not only does it contain the classic salicylic acid, which exfoliates and decreases inflammation, says Dr. Bowe, but it also contains sandalwood oil to calm inflammation and counteract any dryness from the active ingredients. This treatment is a major steal: It’s super affordable and it works on every type of zit including blackheads, whiteheads, and even angry papules.
Anti-aging products made up a $130 billion market in 2017, a number that the Infinium Global Research Group projects will continue to rise. It’s a big business. Needless to say, there are a lot of formulas to choose from: Whole aisles in drugstores and department stores are devoted to combating wrinkles, fine lines, and sun-damaged skin.
“The evening cleanse is crucial to removing dirt, oil and makeup, but during sleep, the oils that your skin produces are hydrating and balancing, so they shouldn’t be washed away in the morning,” DeSimone said.
Whoever said acne was a teenage problem—and that after adolescence, you’ve got smooth, clear skin forever—was totally lying. Acne lingers long beyond puberty and is caused by a myriad of common skin problems. Pimples may pop up if acne runs in your family or because it’s right before that time of the month. Blemishes may even appear after a day’s worth of oil and bacteria build up on your face. While genetics and hormones are beyond your control, what you can rein in is your skin-care regimen. It’s time to step away from that same tube of spot cream you’ve been using since high school because there’s a slew of new items in the beauty aisle to help clear up your skin.

To find the right product for your skin type and activities see how I rate the products on my Sunscreen Comparison Chart. My top picks for the most highly sensitive skin are the pure mineral zinc oxide products. If your skin is moderately sensitive then you will most likely tolerate any of the sunscreens that I use in my practice.
“It’s a misconception that you’re supposed to be doing all 10 steps every single day,” Charlotte Cho, the board-certified esthetician behind Soko Glam and author of The Little Book of Skin Care, tells SELF. “It’s more about the different variety of products that can be used, depending on your skin concerns and skin type.” For women who are coming from a two or three-step routine, this type of 10-step commitment will likely dwindle down to 5. As a skin-care fanatic (and a beauty editor who must try everything), I did 7 to all 10 steps each day. I really wanted to indulge in this experiment.
It’s worth it to spend a bit more on your bedtime regimen, says Jackson. Regular use of a prescription retinoid is like making a deposit in your 401(k): Retinoids boost reserves of collagen and elastin, preventing future sagging. Not only are they antiaging, they also reduce acne, a bonus for women still suffering through breakouts.
Product picks from my practice: Vanicream Cleansing Bar, Naturally Best Bar Soap for Dry Skin. (Other sensitive skin product options include naturally made unscented glycerin soaps or Dove Unscented Bar Soap.)
What to look for: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect against both UVA and UVB light. A water-based or light liquid-based gel or spray-on sunscreen is best for people who tend to get breakouts. You can also look for light lotions and powder sunscreens. Look for “noncomedogenic” on the label, which means it should not clog your skin’s pores. Watch out for chemicals such as PABA and benzophenone, which can irritate sensitive skin. Look for physical sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Smoking has been shown to make acne worse since it diminishes the delivery of oxygen to the skin and robs it of nutrients, thereby inhibiting scars from healing, Dr. Bank says. Not enough reason to quit? Smoke depletes moisture, making skin lose its luster and look wrinkly.
Remove makeup. If you wear makeup, you should remove it before you go to bed. Some cleansers claim to remove makeup for you, but these may not get rid of all makeup. You may want to have an extra makeup remover on hand. Use it before you cleanse your face.

Moisturize your skin. Your moisturizer goes on after your toner absorbs. You can massage your moisturizer into your skin using upward circular motions to your face and neck. Alternatively, you can apply it to your clean palms and gently pat it in.
I love a micellar water for quick, refreshing makeup removal before I go in with my cleanser, and have always been loyal to Bioderma’s cult favourite, Sensibio, but have recently been using this fragrance-free Garnier version which is a pretty good dupe of the backstage essential. It’s a tad greasier, and requires a little more effort, but the price point (£4.99 for 400ml) is unbeatable and given that I use it as a pre-cleanse it doesn’t bother me that my skin has a slight residue afterwards. There’s also a travel-size for under £2 which comes everywhere with me, rather than risk spilling my pricier micellars en route.
Olay and Neutrogena remain the best, most affordable, wrinkle creams. Olay’s Regenerist line is packed with anti-aging ingredients, while Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night cream contains retinol to smooth your skin. We also have great recommendations for those with sensitive skin and for men — and yes, guys, your skin needs love too.
Not really. A simple washcloth really does most of the work. But who needs a spa appointment when the latest skin-care gadgets — and one surprisingly analog standby — bring the same technology to your bathroom?
Retinol is the crème de la crème (or cream, or serum) when it comes to anti-aging, but it can take some trial and error to find the one that works for you. For example, if you really think a retinol cream is right for you but you have sensitive skin, find a retinol formula targeted for sensitive skin (and we have a top recommendation in that category). If you have deeper wrinkles, look for a dropper or pen-type applicator that makes it easier to directly apply the product just where you need it.
Be choosy when selecting a vitamin C product. Vitamin C in its most commonly found forms is highly unstable when exposed to oxygen, making it useless. Choose one in a tube or a pump. Also, many topical vitamin C preparations do not penetrate the skin enough to make a difference.
Store beauty products in cool, dark places like medicine cabinets, drawers or closets. Once you’ve opened a jar its contents are exposed to light and air, which speeds up its deterioration. Jars and pumps prevent air entry
All acne is not, actually, created equal. This makes perfect sense, seeing as there are so many factors, from hygiene to hormones to genetics, that can both lead to and exacerbate your breakouts. But knowledge is power, and just knowing that there are different types—and that each kind requires its own plan of attack—puts you ahead of the clear-skin curve. Once you figure out what you’re working with, it gets far easier to treat. Here, your ultimate guide to identifying, and then taking down, every type of acne out there.
