Try to avoid habits that can cause acne, redness, and scars. Don’t pick at your skin — especially pimples. Keep hairspray and gel away from your face. They can clog pores. Don’t wear tight headbands or wool hats that can irritate your skin. Don’t smoke. It can age your skin and make it yellow and dry.

Wear sunscreen everyday. Daily sun exposure can cause premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and other problems. Even if you don’t plan on going outside for long, put on sunscreen before you leave home. Your sunscreen should be SPF 30 or higher.[7] Apply it fifteen minutes before going outside. [8]

Not really. A simple washcloth really does most of the work. But who needs a spa appointment when the latest skin-care gadgets — and one surprisingly analog standby — bring the same technology to your bathroom?
We consider ourselves quite the skincare fanatics here at Byrdie HQ—it’s hard not to be when our desks look like they could be featured in an episode of Hoarders: Skincare Edition (currently in the process of pitching that idea to A&E). However, we are well aware that our plight is a unique one and that the average woman is more concerned about what to use on her face rather than where to store her eighth cleanser of the week.
“Complete nutrition for the epidermis is critical. The epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) is a key protective structure that uses 23 vitamins. These vitamins must be provided at therapeutic concentrations and delivered within the epidermis for optimum skin health. A vitamin serum is non-irritating and formulated with vitamins A, B, C, D, and E to give skin the nutrition it needs.” — Carl Thornfeldt, MD
Your sensitive skin may be due to an allergy (such as a rash from fragrance ingredients.) Or your skin may be irritated (for instance, if acne treatment products like benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid gave you a rash or chapped your skin.)
Why She Loves It: This retinol keeps things simple. “It contains both retinol and exfoliating lactic acid, and the pump dispenses just the just the right amount of the stuff,” says Williams. “I love pairing this with SkinBetter Science’s Alto defense serum because it keeps skin care streamlined.”

“It’s been said a million and one times, but effectively removing makeup is the gateway to clearer, healthier skin. When makeup is removed, the skin becomes a clean canvas ready to absorb product. An easy tip is to clean your face as soon as you get in the door instead of waiting right before you go to bed. Just as you are dying to get out of your constricting work clothes, skin desperately wants to rid itself of pore-clogging debris and pollution! We like to use a gentle cleansing oil as a first step.” — Sarah Lee and Christine Chang
You can dry your skin by washing it too much, so once a day is fine for most people. In the morning, rinse your face with lukewarm water. Use a soft towel to pat it dry. At night, wash with a cleanser or gentle soap gets rid of the day’s dirt and makeup. If you exercise, play sports, or have PE, you may want to wash your face afterward with a gentle cleanser. Sweat can clog your pores and make acne worse.
Warning: People who are allergic to salycylates (found in aspirin) should not use products containing salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Pregnant or nursing women should not use products containing salicylic acid.
The Erno Laszlo Anti-Blemish Beta Wash ($45, sephora.com) has an antiseptic ingredient that helps clear away the bacteria behind your breakouts. There’s also salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin. Consider this the sophisticated version of the acne wash you used as a teen.
With the many options of wrinkle creams available, it is not always easy to know if you are making a safe and effective choice. Here are a few tips to ensure you have chosen a safe and reliable brand.
Simple alcohols destroy the skin’s barrier, called the acid mantle, which is what keeps your skin’s pH in its happy place (and your skin blemish-free). “A lot of products that are marketed to treat acne do not maintain — or even consider the importance of — the skin’s acid mantle,” explains Natarsha Bimson, a Los Angeles-based aesthetician. “It’s a huge issue.” In one study, even a small, 3 percent alcohol solution applied to skin cells over the course of two days increased cell death by 26 percent — in some acne treatments, like Kate Somerville’s EradiKate, alcohol is one of the first ingredients listed, meaning it’s a largely alcohol-based formula.
How to Handle It: If you’ve tried the usual anti-acne ingredients, like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide (which, we should warn you, rarely work for this), you should consider paying your dermatologist a visit. “You may need a cortisone injection or an oral medication, like an antibiotic, in addition to topical formulas,” says Zeichner. He’s also a fan of a prescription topical medication called Epiduo Forte Gel, since, he says, it’s been shown to be effective at controlling severe acne without the help of oral treatments.
To make zits less noticeable, you can cover them with oil-free makeup. Foundation may help cover large patches of acne. Concealer covers smaller areas. Green-tinted color-correcting concealer may cancel out redness. You also can hide acne and treat it at the same time. Some tinted creams and concealers contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Stop using any product if it bothers your skin or causes more acne.

There are few over-the-counter wrinkle creams that get the kind of praise that Olay Micro-Sculpting Serum (Est. $21 for 1.7 oz.) does. The Olay Regenerist line is well-respected by experts for its effective, beneficial formulas, and the Micro-Sculpting line is no exception. At Good Housekeeping, it earns a Seal of Approval for its ability to hydrate and smooth skin, as well as for its lab-proven anti-aging properties. As with all serums, because it doesn’t have any sun protection factor, it’s best used at night or as a base for moisturizing creams or makeup.
Promising Review: “I love the velvety texture of this cleanser on my skin! You only need a pea-sized amount of product for it to slightly lather up and clean your face. The smell of grapefruit and ginger is very addicting. And the small beads are so beneficial. I could feel it exfoliate and actually stimulate my pores. It is very hydrating for a product that is oil-free!” —Gina O.
Take care of your gorgeous skin and keep it smooth and hydrated all year round. Whatever your skin type, cleansing, hydrating and exfoliating on a regular basis can help to maintain a healthy balance. Oranges are rich in vitamin C. It helps to eliminate the oiliness of the skin, fights against ageing. It also improves the extra texture of the skin. Orange gives a fair younger looking skin. Apply orange juice on your skin directly, or you can mix it with other ingredients also.
“Your diet has a huge impact on your skin. Avoid starchy vegetables and refined carbohydrates like white bread and rice and instead opt for foods high in omega 3’s and fatty acids like avocados and salmon to help give you that youthful glow.” –Whitney Bowe, dermatologist, New York City
What’s Going On: Do you tend to get these at the same time every month—say, just before you get your period? Because these are the work of fluctuating hormones, says Joshua Zeichner,, a dermatologist and the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Hormones can put oil production into overdrive, and having an excess of it means that it’s more likely to settle in your pores and cause zits.
Wrinkle cream is the long con of skin care, a commitment to a daily routine that won’t show results for months, or even years. There’s no over-the-counter quick fix for wrinkles — nothing we can slather on one night and wake up crease-free the next morning. When it comes to even the best wrinkle creams, we invest in the routine and, to a certain extent, cross our fingers that 10 or 20 years from now we may look 10 or 20 years younger than we would have without them.
I’m done. At this point, I just lunge my entire body horizontal onto the hardwood floors and belly slide like a baby seal all the way to my bed. Consider applying just one or five more layers of lip balm. The control variable in this freak show is my morning routine which consists of America’s sweetheart duo: Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser and Priming Moisturizer Rich to keep things consistent and carefree. I would tell you about my airplane routine but we’ll take a raincheck on that for my future Youtube channel.
If you have multiple concerns, you might want to use multiple formulas. “I recommend treating different areas with different products,” Mattioli says. “Maybe you’ll use a vitamin C serum all over but then dab on [another] for hyperpigmentation on just a few spots.” Just run any combination by your dermatologist to avoid any potential reactions.
My Experience: Even if you complete the most basic skin-care routine, moisturizer should be worn day and night. I switched over to Belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb ($38, sephora.com) for this particular experiment. I looked forward to applying this cream every night. It felt like it was doing its duty, sealing in all the other skin care while providing hydration. Waking up ever morning, my skin didn’t feel greasy or sticky.
In most cases, acne products need to be used for at least 30 days before you can begin to ascertain its efficacy. Some skin and acne types may see noticeable results in a few days and end up totally clear in just a few weeks. Others may take several weeks to see the slightest change, or need to have their regimen adjusted as their skin adapts. Treating acne can often be a months-long process.
Cleanses Skin: Milk is a natural cleansing agent. Just mix about 2 teaspoons milk with 1 tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp lemon juice. Apply this on your face, leave for 15 minutes and wash off for clean and clear skin.
Microcurrent waves: A low-level current sends waves through the skin to tighten and contour the facial muscles — think of it as a workout for your complexion. [NuFace Trinity Facial Toning Device, $325]
Most facial oils can be used twice daily, both morning and night. They should be applied after facial serums and gels, but before your creams and lotions. Spread a dime-size amount between your palms and pat it on, targeting the outer areas of the face, and then sweeping in toward the center, around your eyes, nose and lips.
I’ve never been particularly impressed by fancy things. Pretty packaging, yes – show me something in rose gold and I’m interested – but a beauty product has to have substance rather than style to really wow me. I rarely buy into a brand, usually only a product, and the price tag has to be justified, somehow; I’m not going to spend the equivalent of my monthly London travel card on a face cream and while I have no problem with those that are able to and do, for most of us I think it’s reasonable to hope for affordable, efficacious products that leave both your skin and your bank account balanced. After all, one of my favourite products in the world is a skin-soothing cream that costs less than £2.
Of course! Keep in mind that because of male hormones, the skin may be more oily (but, not always the case). The marketing of many skin care products are geared toward females; however, they can be used on males as well. Once you know your skin type you can lay out a routine. If you need help, you can see an esthetician or visit a dermatologist.
Based on its popularity with our customers, La Roche Posay’s Anthelios line has become your go-to for effective, safe and stable sunscreens. When Mindy Kaling talks, we listen. And after she waxed poetic about the Tria Acne Clearing Blue Light ($299, triabeauty.com), we knew it had to be a total bump-blaster. While dermatologists have been using LED light in-office to treat acne for over a decade, it’s only recently that the FDA cleared the same technology for hand-held, at-home use. “The P. acne bacteria produce special light-sensitive compounds called porphyrins,” Dr. Whitney Bowe, a board certified dermatologist in New York City, tells SELF. “When you shine specific wavelengths of these compounds, the porphyrins are excited and then killed.”
In the days before your period, swapping out your regular cleanser for one with antibacterial benzoyl peroxide (BP) like the Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser can keep zits from cropping up, says Robert Anolik, a dermatologist in New York City. (If you find it too drying, use it only on your lower face to target impending zits.) But, again, he stresses, “even if you knock out bacteria and unclog pores, hormonal acne will often persist without the help of birth-control pills.” While Anolik prefers BP for pimple prevention, once bumps arise, he likes salicylic acid (in both spot treatments like this and masks) for its unparalleled ability to free up pores and temper swelling.
Take a ripe banana that helps in treating oily skin. Mash a ripe banana, add a tablespoon of honey and a few drops of lemon into it. Mix them well and apply this fruit mask to your face and neck. Leave it for about 20 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water. Repeat it once a week to get rid of oily skin and helps to cure acne.
Tomatoes are great for oily skin due to its properties of cooling and clearing. The natural oil-absorbing acids in tomatoes also help get rid of excess oil. Rub a cut tomato on the skin till the juice soaks the skin. Rinse after 15 minutes with cold water.

Touted as a pure and natural way to improve your skin, botanical facial oils — infused with plant and farm-fresh extracts — have exploded into the mainstream market lately. Still, experts often advise caution when dousing yourself, as not all oils are created equal. “I recommend avoiding essential oils or those with added perfumes, which increase potential of skin irritation,” Dr. Nazarian says.
Clearasil claims that it’s capable of clearing up to 85% of your acne within four weeks. But my experience shows that it’s a good face wash for acne-prone skin, and that it shouldn’t be taken as a stand-alone acne treatment.
It has large pores and the skin has a coarse look. On the other hand, oily skin tends to age in a better manner and there are fewer wrinkles on it as compared to dry or normal skin. So it is not all that bad. But it is true that it is difficult to maintain an oily skin.
Sheet masks: “These are primarily hydrating. Having ingredients saturated on the skin in this occlusive manner keeps air from getting in and you’ll get a higher absorption in a short amount of time. I always recommend keeping these in the fridge to get an anti-inflammatory benefit as well.”
For a safer tan, try sunless self-tanner. It stains your skin and comes in many forms, including lotions, sprays, and towelettes. Or try airbrush tanning, where a salon expert sprays the tan right on your skin. For a quick fake tan, try some bronzer. It’s a brush-on powder or tinted cream that gives the look of a fresh tan. But remember — you’ll still need to protect your skin from the sun.
“Another great at-home treatment is lymphatic drainage massage to keep skin clear, de-puffed, and glowing. For dry skin, massage in circular motions upward. Start at the base of the neck where your arteries are. Massage in gentle circles upwards, toward the jaw, up the sides of the face, and around the eyes. This will help coax nutrients into the tissue. You want to do the opposite motion and start on the top of the face by the eyes if you are prone to breakouts—this will draw the waste away. Lymphatic drainage massage can completely change the look of someone’s face and is a great, under-the-radar skincare tip.” — Joanna Vargas
My Experience: I’m all for lazy exfoliating options like wipes instead of scrubs, which is why Cho’s recommendation of Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Wine ($21, amazon.com) was perfect for me. I could easily exfoliate away, while watching The Bachelor on my couch. The double-sided wipes were packed with red wine (which you could seriously smell, but in a nonalcoholic stench) and lactic acid. The gauze side was bumpier allowing you to really feel as though your sloughing away any gunk clogging up your pores. Then the quilted side gave you a gentle finish to the process. I did this three times during the seven-day trial.
Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you – it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin.
Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores.
Once a week, slather your hands and feet with a thick lotion and cover in plastic wrap for about a half-hour—then strip it away to check out the soft results. For severely dry, chapped hands, Dr. Levine likes dense, rich Triple Cream ($19; drugstore.com), a formula derived from diaper- rash ointment, with oat-kernel extract and petrolatum.

Sure, you could use your makeup remover on a cotton pad at night and call it a day, but that means you’ll most likely end up with black streaks of mascara on your pillowcase the next morning. To truly remove ALL makeup, reach for an oil cleanser. Massage it over your dry face and neck to break up makeup and then add a splash of lukewarm water to emulsify the cleanser. Massage again and then rinse everything off!
My Experience: In a light patting motion, I applied Erborian Gineng Infusion Total Eye ($36, usa.erborian.com) every night. This particular eye product was a creamy texture that absorbed quickly. So I didn’t have to do any rough rubbing to get the cream to sink in. “When you’re pulling and tugging at the area, it causes premature wrinkles,” explains Cho. During my regular routine, I’ll apply an eye cream about two times a week. But I saw my dark circles and puffiness diminish by using this every night. I also applied it during the day a couple times, and this product was great to wear under makeup without smearing my concealer.
Every other day, Choi adds an extra step to the mix. After cleansing, she exfoliates with Skinfood’s Black Sugar Strawberry Wash Off Mask. She said it helps with her “healthy, natural glow,” and she’s not wrong. Both sugar and strawberry are excellent yet gentle ingredients for sloughing away dead skin cells and letting your skin shine on its own. Also, once or twice a week, Choi breaks open a sheet mask from K-beauty brand Innisfree. (They go for about $1.80 each.)
What’s Going On: You don’t actually see these so much as feel them—which is why they’re called blind pimples. “A blind pimple is like a balloon under the skin with no connection to the skin’s surface, so there’s nowhere for it to go,” explains Zeichner. The pressure just builds beneath the skin, which is what makes it sensitive to the touch.
“When you eat hydrating fruits and vegetables like grapefruit or cucumber, the water penetrates and plumps up cells better than drinking water,” Dr. Murad says. Aim for three daily servings of fruit and five of veggies.
Somehow, the idea that moisturizers are a no-no for pimple-prone skin started circulating many years back, and now a lot of people with acne avoid them like the plague. In reality, moisturizers are an essential part of the acne skin care routine. The acne treatment your dermatologist prescribed or recommended may contain drying ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, which can suck the moisture out of your skin and leave it looking red and irritated. A good moisturizer will keep the water in your skin and help avoid unsightly drying and peeling.
As your trusted source for anti-aging skincare information, I felt the need to investigate. I’ll tell you exactly how to avoid these scams, and I’ll recommend a few legitimate wrinkle creams and anti-aging serums from sources I trust. I want to save you time and headache and help you find real anti-aging solutions because you deserve better—we all do.
Most of our other recommendations will cost you more than the average acne treatment. If you’re looking for something that can treat your breakouts without breaking your budget, try the Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System. This three-piece set scores points for including sunscreen, which will help protect your skin while it’s sensitive from treatment.
Kiehl’s Avocado Creamy Eye Treatment cannot be beat. However, I should mention I’m considering dipping my toes into the undereye oils and serums realm to kick things up a notch. Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Concerns?

  2. Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.
Use an oil-free foaming cleanser to wash your face. Rinse with plenty of warm water. You may want to use a toner or astringent after, but be careful because it might irritate your skin. These products can remove extra oil, which makes your face less shiny, and help keep skin clean.
Promising Review: “I have sensitive, fair, blemish-prone, combination skin. I was previously using Proactiv. But this wash is a much less expensive alternative. It also smells better than Proactiv! The Neutrogena wash has worked really well on my combination skin. I always feel refreshed after I use it. I usually scrub it on my face, rinse with warm water, and then use a warm, wet washcloth to get any remaining scrub off of my face. I also use the Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion to moisturize my face.” —Mhanley
Some wrinkle creams can be worn all day, but most are designed to be applied at night. That’s because they typically don’t contain sunscreen and some of the most powerful ingredients that they do contain, such as retinol, easily degrade in daylight and can make skin extra sensitive to the sun. Still, there are wrinkle creams that people put on in the morning and wear all day, under makeup or another moisturizer or both. Remember, experts say you should always wear a moisturizer containing sunscreen on your face during the day to protect your skin from the aging properties of the sun and other types of environmental damage — otherwise, you’re negating the effect of the wrinkle cream.
Unlike many anti-aging creams, Olay Regenerist does not contain retinol, which is a proven wrinkle-fighter. However, that works in its favor as the omission of retinol, plus its lack of fragrance, make it suitable for even the most sensitive skin. Many users say this is the only product they can use that does not make them break out or cause irritation or allergic reactions.
Treat uneven skin tones with lightening ingredients. If you want to reduce hyperpigmentation or dark spots on your face, choose ingredients that will lighten these areas. Some products that may be effective include:[22]
Removes Tan: Save the money you spend on your sun tack packs for something else. Just prepare a pack by mixing 4 tsp gram flour with 1 tsp each of lemon, yogurt and turmeric powder. Apply to your cleansed face and wash off with cool water after the pack dries. The good news is that this pack can be applied daily without any side effects.
Every night, Choi starts off by taking off her makeup with an Allure-editor favorite that we just can’t get enough of: Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes. She doesn’t stop there, though. (That might be where you’re going wrong.) Choi then washes her face with one of two cleansers. The more affordable option she recommends is Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, which is about $7. She also loves the $19.50 Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser. Both are decent options if you ask me. Both formulas won’t strip your skin of moisture but will remove every ounce of makeup and grime from your face.
Don’t neglect the rest of your routine. This includes the obvious: Wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser. If you wear heavy eye makeup, invest in a dedicated eye makeup remover to avoid tugging at the delicate skin around your eyes more than necessary. You may also want to explore eye creams, which use many of the same ingredients found in wrinkle creams, but in gentle doses intended for the very thin skin under your eyes.
