Dermalogica sells its full-size Clear Start products a la carte (all at around $20 — this line is definitely not made for the thrifty), and there are even more options than the five in the travel kit. We were surprised how much the products appealed to us: We didn’t pay attention to the aesthetics of most acne treatments, but the Clear Start caught our eye in a god way. More importantly, we loved the mix of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, plus all-natural heavy hitters like tea tree oil and witch hazel. And in addition to the wash, toner, moisturizer, and treatments, the kit includes an acne-safe (read: oil-free) sunscreen in its lineup.
This daily face wash certainly has an attractive price, just US $4.99 for 6.5 fluid oz/195 ml. It is great for getting rid of makeup without the need for using cold cream. But it uses the same ingredients as bar soap that can make it too drying for anyone who does not have very oily skin, and it contains menthol and fragrances that can cause breakouts on sensitive skin. Even though the price is great, you probably will spend a lot more than you will save on concealer and skin restoration products if you use this product regularly.
If you’re used to seeing advertisements for acne treatments using five or six different products to clear up blemishes, you might be surprised that a simple three-step kit is our top pick. My Experience: My primary question: Why not just use a toner and a serum in place of this essence step? It seemed obsolete to me. Yes, it was nice to splash my face with the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence ($28, amazon.com). But it felt like the results I was attempting to gain from using an essence could have been achieved with the typical toner-serum combo. Moisturizer With SPF: “When you moisturize, do two applications,” Rouleau says. “One on the face and one on the neck. Sun protection isn’t just about the number—it’s about how generously you apply it.” A light moisturizer like Origins A Perfect World SPF 25 Age Defense Moisturizer With White Tea ($44) will protect your skin from the sun and hydrate without clogging your pores. Rouleau suggests looking for ingredients like dimethicone, panthenol, and sodium hyaluronate (also known as hyaluronic acid).
To repair and protect, look for a serum rich in antioxidants, like vitamin C or E, or epidermal growth factors to help stimulate collagen production, says Jackson. (If you’ve become particularly concerned about your eye area, give your eye cream an extra boost with a specialized serum containing the same ingredients.) Over that, layer a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 30 moisturizer.
If you wear makeup, choose products that have “nonacnegenic” or “noncomedogenic” on the label. They should be less likely to cause acne or clog pores. Look for makeup that’s water-based and not oil-based. Some products have expiration dates, even though they aren’t required. Most of the time, you’ll need to replace eye makeup first. For example, don’t use mascara longer than 4 months.
For a safer tan, try sunless self-tanner. It stains your skin and comes in many forms, including lotions, sprays, and towelettes. Or try airbrush tanning, where a salon expert sprays the tan right on your skin. For a quick fake tan, try some bronzer. It’s a brush-on powder or tinted cream that gives the look of a fresh tan. But remember — you’ll still need to protect your skin from the sun.
