Sure, you could use your makeup remover on a cotton pad at night and call it a day, but that means you’ll most likely end up with black streaks of mascara on your pillowcase the next morning. To truly remove ALL makeup, reach for an oil cleanser. Massage it over your dry face and neck to break up makeup and then add a splash of lukewarm water to emulsify the cleanser. Massage again and then rinse everything off!

Don’t give up. It’s tough to be consistent when you won’t see results for weeks, months, or sometimes even years. But keep the faith. A wrinkle cream with the right ingredients will ultimately keep you looking younger. “These products won’t work if you don’t use them consistently for several weeks,” says Dr. Ford. “Try taking a selfie at the beginning of treatment and again at 90 days,” she recommends. “See if change is occurring: your freckles should be lighter, wrinkles should be less noticeable, and your skin more radiant.”

A couple of affordable and readily available drugstore brands landed in this category. They contain retinoids and AHAs, the two most important anti-wrinkle ingredients. All they lack is sodium hyaluronate — our favorite moisturizer. An easy work-around is to add a face moisturizer to your routine — preferably one that does contain sodium hyaluronate. For writer Celeste Ballard, Dr. Carver’s Easy Shave Butter is the only shaving product that prevents her legs from turning “into a minefield of razor bumps.” She explains, “Compared to the drying, floral-scented shave-cream cans of my past, the experience is practically luxurious. The real difference is that the cream doesn’t lather, so it doesn’t feel like it’s ever stripping my legs of protective oils. I can even glide over the same spot a few times without repercussion.”
Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding Intensive Wash-Off Treatment ($38, sephora.com) contains activated charcoal (duh) that absorbs all kinds of impurities and clears out clogged pores. It also contains willowherb, an ultra-soothing ingredient to reduce any post-treatment inflammation. The spatula for application that comes with it makes the whole treatment feel, well, pretty luxurious. Keep a jar of it for a rainy spa day at home.
All of Proactiv’s regimens are heavy on the benzoyl peroxide, and the Proactiv+ three-step kit is no different: a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide wash, a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide gel, and a 0.5 percent salicylic acid moisturizer.
Hydrating Moisturizer: “Some ingredients I recommend to look for in moisturizers are rosehip seed oil, evening primrose oil, borage oil, phospholipids, cranberry oil, sweet almond oil, and jojoba oil,” Rouleau says. “All of these ingredients mimic the natural lipids in your skin and do a better job of repairing your skin’s moisture barrier.” Try Perricone MD’s Nourishing Moisturizer ($80) or Intraceuticals’ Rejuvenate Moisture Binding Cream ($69) for a big dose of moisture that doesn’t feel greasy.
This compact flawlessly blends into your skin making it look visibly fair and translucently radiant. Its unique formula contains skin brightening pearls, vitamin B3 (lightens skin) and SPF 23 UVA and UVB protection. It provides a matte finish and gives an oil free look.
Tip: “Applying toner with clean hands is the most efficient. Just pour a few drops in your palm, then swipe it on.” Or if you prefer, you can pull apart a cotton pad “so it’s not so thick before putting toner on it,” Mattioli advises. Most formulas can be used morning and night, but you might want to use those with exfoliating acids only at night or every other day.  
Face Oil: Your skin gets drier as it ages, so consider incorporating a nourishing face oil with anti-aging ingredients, like Sunday Riley’s Juno Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil ($90), into your p.m. skin regimen a few times a week.
Intimidating, much? Like I tell all my girlfriends, this routine only takes about 15 minutes out of my evening (sheet masks and exfoliating packs are not really a daily thing), and it’s actually a bit therapeutic to pamper my face as I wind down for the night. The key is daily prevention and nurturing, which eliminates any need for expensive facials. Sure, if you’re stumbling home a bit toasty, barely able to take off your triple-strapped sandals, do yourself a favor and at least wipe off the day’s makeup with some cleansing tissues. Sleeping in your makeup is the universal ultimate skincare sin—whether you’re in NYC or Seoul.
While not mandatory, an increasing number of cosmetics companies label their products with expiration dates. Use these as general guidelines certainly, but I can’t emphasize enough that when it comes to assessing safety that there are no set rules when it comes to expired skin care products. Changes in smell, color or consistency are signs to trash your product. In order to maintain healthy skin, replace your skin care products on a regular basis.
Check your skin regularly: New spots or moles that itch, bleed or change color are often early warning signs of skin cancer. If you notice any suspicious spots, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. Men over age 50 have a higher risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, than the general population. However, when caught early, skin cancer is highly treatable.
To give dry skin healthy, natural oil, Dr. Shamban recommends a weekly 15-minute mask of mashed avocado. Or once a week massage a tablespoon of olive oil into your face in lieu of your usual night cream—but skip it if you’re acne-prone.
