To say that face masks have become popular lately is a bit of an understatement — Sephora has more than 400 varieties (and 60 of those launched in the last few months). Masks “offer highly concentrated treatments to address specific issues,” says New York City dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner. But unlike a toner or a serum, masks deliver ingredients under occlusion, which helps the ingredients absorb more efficiently, notes Dr. Nazarian.
Vitamin A derivatives are key to anti-aging regimens, yet many women avoid them because they’re irritating. Dr. Day recommends building up tolerance by using a pea-size drop every other day. Or for a milder version, try Atralin ($192; by prescription). “It’s a gel base and gentler than thicker creams,” says San Francisco dermatologist Seth Matarasso. Whichever retinol you opt for, counter redness with an antioxidant-rich moisturizer like Revaléskin night cream with coffeeberry ($72; skinstore.com).
I have to say, during my seven-day experiment, only one night felt like work. The other six nights, it was a nice way to unwind while chatting with my roommates or catching up on The Affair. “Western culture’s skin-care routine is more of a chore almost,” claims Cho. “You just put on whatever you have in the bathroom.” But she explains that with a Korean-skin mind-set, it’s all about pampering and taking care of yourself. By the end of my vigorous week, my skin felt smoother. My red, blotchy inflammation calmed down and my undereye bags were almost nonexistent. I was so confident in my skin, I didn’t wear makeup the following week. Will I do all 10 steps again? Probably not. Using a toner, essence, AND serum seemed redundant. But double cleansing is the way forward for my city lifestyle.
Don’t just grab whatever soap is in the shower or at the sink to wash your face. And don’t feel like you have to buy fancy, expensive products, either. Just find skin care that works for you. Apply a gentle cleanser or soap with your fingertips. Don’t scrub your face. Rinse with plenty of warm water, then pat dry. If your skin dries out or gets oily, try a different cleanser.
Heals Inflammation: Packed with anti-inflammatory properties, regular application of this oil has been proven to heal your allergic inflammations. This property of til oil can also be used to heal fungal infections affecting your skin during cold weather.
Glycolic Acid Product: When it comes to keeping your normal skin normal, Rouleau suggests incorporating glycolic acid into your routine a few times a week. “This is an [alpha-hydroxy acid] that is favored because it has the smallest molecular structure and can absorb deeper within the skin,” Rouleau explains. “This helps to dissolve surface dry skin cells to encourage brighter, more even-toned, smoother skin.” Try Dr. Dennis Gross’s Alpha Beta Peel ($48) for easy, on-the-go smoothing and brightening.
Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin.
Don’t overdo it. It can be tempting to layer on lots of cream, especially if you’re excited about trying out a new product. But everyone’s sensitivity to retinol and AHAs is different, so it’s best to be cautious until you know how well your skin will tolerate the product. Dr. Ford recommends a graduated approach: “We tell our patients to begin using retinol on Mondays and Thursdays for a few weeks, then up it to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a few more weeks, and eventually you’ll just be taking weekends off. Some people can tolerate these products every day of the week.”
What to look for : Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer labeled “non-comedogenic” — which is just a fancy way of saying that it won’t clog your pores. Also look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which hold moisture in the skin. What to avoid? Heavy, greasy products that contain pimple-producing ingredients such as cocoa butter, mineral oil, or cold cream.
“The biggest side effect of using the wrong moisturizer is developing milia, little hard white bumps on the face in random areas,” Dr. Rutledge Forney of Dermatology Affiliates in Atlanta, Georgia told Southern Living. “This is very common if [you’re] using a body moisturizer on the face but can also happen with moisturizers which are too heavy.”
Of course there are ways around that. Some jars come with applicators: little spoons that you’re supposed to use to take dollops of the product out. Maybe you’re the type that can always follow the rules (we’re not) — so while we didn’t declare tubs a deal breaker, we did consider it.
Simply put, serums are powerful skin allies. Filled with concentrated doses of active ingredients, these elixirs can mitigate a number of issues, from dark spots to wrinkles. “Even if you don’t have any specific issues, everyone still needs a general antioxidant serum in the morning to protect from daily aggressors,” Mattioli says. While there are “limitless options” for ingredients, Nazarian singles out her hardworking favorites. To handle specific issues, look for these products:
Be choosy when selecting a vitamin C product. Vitamin C in its most commonly found forms is highly unstable when exposed to oxygen, making it useless. Choose one in a tube or a pump. Also, many topical vitamin C preparations do not penetrate the skin enough to make a difference.

Keep in mind that even if some products market themselves toward severe acne breakouts, all the kits we looked at are definitely designed for mild to moderate acne. Not sure where you fit on that scale? You’re not alone! When you’re in the middle of a breakout, all acne seems severe, so it can be difficult to self-diagnose your symptoms. “Always have a mini spa treatment at the ready in case you get a Tinder match you want to meet or have drinks with your boss. Glycolic or salicylic acid wipes, a lightweight moisturizer, and lip polish, for example.” –Ava Shamban, dermatologist, Los Angeles, and author of Heal Your Skin
When your acid mantle is damaged, you’re actually more susceptible to breakouts, enlarged pores, and inflammation. To make matters worse, evaporating all the oil on your face can actually set your sebaceous glands into overdrive, leaving your skin oilier than ever. If any product included a simple alcohol high up in its ingredients list, we nixed its whole kit.

@ brazen i also get exposed to sunlight a lot and would recommend Cetaphil as it has no photosensitive effects. I use Cetaphil wash and it has really been a great help with my acne. it cleans your skin thoroughly while still being gentle. i would recommend using this with a cleansing brush (clarisonic, luna, spin brush etc) and following with a toner preferably one with witch hazel. these combination of things has worked wonders for my skin. 3 months down the line the improvement has been fantastic. All I’m dealing with now is the scars (Hyperpigmentations).
Rounding out the Clear Acne kit is the Daily Skin Clearing Treatment, an all-over 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream that also touts calming bisabolol and allantoin to alleviate the dryness and irritation that can crop up mid-treatment. Why She Loves It: The only redness you’ll see after using this cream is on the tube since retinyl propionate is a mild retinol, which renews skin surface with less irritation. Because “acne” encompasses everything from small whiteheads to severe cystic acne, keep in mind that what may work best for one person may not work best for another. If your acne is severe enough that it’s affecting the quality of your daily life, we recommend talking to a doctor or a dermatologist before you begin any treatment. We’ve also included a guide below to help you recognize what type of acne you have, what the common causes are, and how to treat it (or at least not aggravate it).
A great cleanser for acne sufferers, with extremely rare negative reviews. The peppermint included in this product, armed with its tremendous therapeutic properties, tingles your body and clears your mind.
All of Proactiv’s regimens are heavy on the benzoyl peroxide, and the Proactiv+ three-step kit is no different: a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide wash, a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide gel, and a 0.5 percent salicylic acid moisturizer.
I have to admit, I didn’t expect to like this – I tend to prefer a liquid cleanser, whereas this is more like a balm because of the way it solidifies in cooler temperatures. However, this is 100% organic coconut oil, which, assuming you haven’t been on another planet for the past year you will know is a hero ingredient be it in your kitchen or your bathroom cabinet. Because it contains lauric acid, giving it antibacterial and anti fungal properties, coconut oil suits all skin types (though do be careful to wash away thoroughly if you have active acne). Best of all, it obliterates makeup in an instant – my liquid eyeliner, hard-wearing mascara and tinted SPF didn’t stand a chance with this. A dream to use, and a tiny bit goes a long way, making it a great budget buy; and, of course, it smells delicious. No-brainer.

A low-glycemic diet-lots of vegetables, whole grains, and few processed sugars-can eliminate acne, according to a new Australian study. Refined carbohydrates, sugary treats, and processed foods spike insulin, which triggers a surge of other hormones that can cause blemishes. Low-glycemic foods, meanwhile, help the body regulate insulin, says Valori Treloar, an integrative dermatologist in Newton, Mass., and the author of The Clear Skin Diet.
